Women's Basketball Selected No. 5 in Patriot League Preseason Poll; Beaudry Named Preseason All-League
October 25, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Following posting its best record in conference games since joining the Patriot League, the Boston University women's basketball was predicted to finish fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll, while senior Sophie Beaudry was named to the preseason All-League Team, as announced by the Patriot League on Wednesday. The annual preseason poll was voted on by all 10 league head coaches and sports information directors.
Army West Point and Bucknell tied for the top spot, as each received seven first-place votes and tallied 140 points. American followed with five first-place votes (134) and Navy grabbed the final first-place vote (119). BU finished with 91 points for the fifth overall spot, while Holy Cross (81), Lehigh (64), Colgate (55), Loyola Maryland (54) and Lafayette (22) rounded out bottom half of the poll.
In her first season as a Terrier, Beaudry burst onto the Patriot League scene averaging a league-best .509 field goal percentage and 2.1 blocks per game to earn spots on the All-Patriot League First Team and the All-Defensive Team. The senior notched double digit scoring figures in all but three league contests and led the Terriers in points (12.9) and rebounds (6.0) per game. Hailing from Chambly, Quebec, Beaudry posted four double-doubles and six 20-point games.
Entering her fourth season as head coach of the Terriers, Katy Steding will look to build upon a team that posted a 10-game turnaround last season en route to going 11-7 in conference play. Beaudry and Corrine Williams will serve as co-captains and return along with Patriot League All-Rookie Team member Nia Irving. BU posted one of the toughest defenses in the conference rankings, leading the league in defensive field goal percentage (.355) and ranked second in both 3-pt defensive field goal percentage (.274) and rebounds per game (39.3).
Fans will have their first opportunity to check out the Terriers at Terrier Madness on Thursday, Nov. 2, at 9 p.m. The 2017-18 season will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 at Case Gym against cross-town rival Northeastern.
