October 29, 2018 | Men's Soccer
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After earning back-to-back one-goal victories at Nickerson Field, the Boston University men's soccer team received three Patriot League weekly awards, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
The Terriers captured six points and a berth to the Patriot League tournament by edging Army West Point, 1-0, and Bucknell, 2-1 (OT). The announcement marks the second time this season that they had three members recognized for their efforts.
Named Defensive Player of the Week for the first time, senior David Riccio played all 187 minutes in the backline. In Wednesday's win over the Black Knights, he helped limit Army to just six shot attempts and then cleared away a shot attempt for a team save. He followed up on Sunday by tallying his first-career goal in the 69th minute to help send the Bucknell game to overtime.
Previously recognized as the Rookie of the Week on Sept. 10, freshman Kari Petursson claimed his first Midfielder of the Week award Monday. He first scored the game-winning goal against the Black Knights by forcing a turnover and firing a low 20-yard shot attempt inside the right post in the 12th minute. He then assisted on both goals against the Bison, first lofting a free kick into the box to set up Riccio's goal and then sending a cross from the left flank in overtime to set up senior Adam Wright's successful header.
Senior Mike Bernardi was named Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time in his career after recording a combined eight saves in the two victories. On Wednesday, he made a leaping save in the 61st minute to help preserve his third shutout of the season. He then made five stops to help BU defeat the Bison for the first time in program history.
BU will next conclude the regular season on Friday night at Colgate with a 6 p.m. start time. The Terriers can finish anywhere from second to fifth depending on multiple results this weekend.
