Terriers Post 5-2 Road Win over UMass Lowell
December 8, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
LOWELL, Mass. - Boosted by a three-goal first period, the Boston University men's ice hockey team earned a weekend split with UMass Lowell by posting a 5-2 road win on Saturday evening at Tsongas Center.
Senior Bobo Carpenter and sophomore Shane Bowers each scored a pair of goals, junior Patrick Curry had a career-high three points (1g, 2a) and junior Jake Oettinger made 40 saves to help the Terriers improve to 5-8-2 with an even 5-5-2 Hockey East mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU scored two 5-on-5 goals, a 4-on-4 tally and a power-play goal in addition to a shorthanded marker by Carpenter that was the eventual game winner.
- The Terriers scored three times in just under four minutes to take a 3-0 lead at 14:02 of the opening period.
- Sophomore Kasper Kotkansalo picked off a Lowell clearing attempt and got the puck to Carpenter who spun around and fired a shot from the inside of the left circle that found the back of the net at 10:03.
- Kotkansalo set up the next goal as well, knocking down an elevated puck at the BU blue line with the teams skating 4-on-4 to set up a rush that Bowers capped with an impressive backhand to the top right of the net at 13:03.
- Fifty-nine seconds later with BU down a player, Carpenter poked in a rebound off a shot by Curry to create the 3-0 cushion.
- Lowell scored just five seconds later – right as BU got back to full strength – to get on the board and cut the BU lead to 3-1.
- The home team made it a one-goal contest midway through the second on a shot from the top of the left circle by Mattias Goransson.
- The BU power play provided an insurance goal in third as Curry curled around the right post and popped a shot over UML netminder Chris Hernberg with 15:06 left in regulation.
- Bowers finished off his two-goal night and sealed the victory with a tally at 17:03 of the third.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers' special teams had a strong night, going 1-for-3 on the power play and killing off all five of Lowell's chances with the man advantage.
- Lowell held a 42-26 shot advantage.
- Kotkansalo and fellow sophomore blueliner David Farrance each had two assists on the night while graduate student Max Willman picked up a helper on Curry's goal.
- This was the fourth straight year that BU and Lowell split their season series.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will close out the 2018 portion of their schedule on Friday (Dec. 14) when they host Dartmouth.
- Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
