Men's Tennis Set to Open Patriot League Tournament against Lehigh
April 26, 2018 | Men's Tennis
BOSTON – Seeking its first Patriot League title, the fifth-seeded Boston University men's tennis team will open the conference tournament against No. 4 Lehigh on Friday with action slated to begin at 11 a.m. at Colgate's Joseph W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
In the event of inclement weather, competition will move indoors to the Drumlins Tennis Center in Syracuse, New York.
The Terriers enter the event at 13-11 with a 3-2 mark against Patriot League competition. They posted a 4-3 win over No. 1 Navy for their second consecutive victory against the Midshipmen before falling to the Mountain Hawks (4-1) and No. 2 Army (4-1), who is the defending conference champion.
BU won its last two matches of the regular season with a 4-1 victory at No. 6 Bucknell and 4-0 sweep against No. 9 Holy Cross. The Terriers are 3-1 all-time in the Patriot League quarterfinals and will be facing Lehigh for the second time since edging the Mountain Hawks, 4-3, in 2015. That win snapped the Mountain Hawks' four-year streak in reaching the semifinals.
The Mountain Hawks (11-10) are currently on a three-match win streak with a 5-3 Patriot League record that features wins over Bucknell (4-3) and losses to the top three seeds, Navy (6-1), Army (4-2) and Colgate (4-3).
Without a senior on the team, BU is led by junior and 2017 All-PL Second Team member Satyajit Simhadri, who owns five singles wins at the No. 1 slot. The Terriers feature six new faces this season with freshman David Bogatin owning a team-high 22 singles victories, just ahead of classmate Owen Lu (20) and sophomore Marc Sable (18).
In doubles action, head coach Dejan Stankovic has used 15 total combinations during the dual season. Bogatin and Oregon sophomore transfer Fabian Soemarno own a 3-1 record in the top slot and are 8-5 overall together. Lu and freshman Ethan Kolsky have gone 4-1 against PL competition and leads all Terrier duos with 10 victories.
The winner of Friday's match will face either No. 1 Navy, No. 8 Lafayette or No. 9 Holy Cross on Saturday in the semifinals at 10 a.m. The last two remaining teams will face off for the automatic NCAA berth Sunday at 12 p.m.
