BOSTON – Freshman
Ali Dubois recorded a combined seven strikeouts and four Terriers contributed at least one RBI apiece to help the Boston University softball team claim a doubleheader sweep over defending Patriot League champion Lehigh on Sunday afternoon.
Avenging yesterday's 8-5 defeat with a 5-0 shutout win and 3-1 victory, the Terriers improve to 20-17 and 4-2 in conference play, while the preseason favorite Mountain Hawks fall to 11-19 (6-3 PL) after suffering just their fourth DH loss to a conference opponent in 25 years. Colgate (2011), Army West Point (2004) and Bucknell (1998) were the other three teams to have accomplished the feat.
Dubois (14-6) held Lehigh to just three hits in the first contest for her fifth shutout of the season and then allowed only two more in the final four innings of the second game. Senior
Jilee Schanda recorded a double in each contest, while both junior
Alex Heinen and senior
Kaitlin Sahlinger contributed two RBIs apiece.
GAME 1: BU 5, Lehigh 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Dubois struck out a pair of Mountain Hawks in the top of the first, the Terriers took the lead for good in the bottom half without the ball leaving the infield.
- Senior Brittany Younan started off with a walk and took second on a Lehigh error before junior Madi Killebrew loaded the bases on a one-out infield single.
- With two outs, Sahlinger drew a bases-loaded walk for the 1-0 advantage.
- After stranding a runner at third in the second, Lehigh had two on with zero outs before Schanda caught a short pop up in center and quickly threw to first for the double play.
- BU later added three runs in the third off three hits and another Lehigh error with Schanda and Sahlinger hitting back-to-back RBI doubles to left.
- Younan scored the final run in the fourth on an RBI single by Heinen.
- Dubois retired 12 straight before Lehigh led off the seventh with a single and walk, but Dubois bounced back with a pair of ground outs and liner to first to seal the shutout victory.
GAME 2: BU 3, Lehigh 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Unable to take advantage of a pair of singles to the outfield in the second, Lehigh scored its lone run of the day in the top of the third when Emily Preble skied a ball toward left center that kept on carrying for a solo homer against freshman Cali Dolfi.
- With two on and two outs in the bottom half, Lehigh misplayed Heinen's RBI single to center to allow senior Emma Wong to join freshman Jen Horita in reaching home plate for a 2-1 lead.
- Lehigh started the fourth with a single to prompt the return of Dubois to the circle.
- The Mountain Hawks then had a sacrifice bunt and walk before flying out twice to strand a pair of runners on base.
- Nicole Yozzo entered the series ranked third nationally in stolen bases per game (0.96) and led off both the first and fifth with singles, but Heinen threw her out twice at second to help BU maintain the 2-1 lead.
- BU added an insurance run in the sixth started by Killebrew's hit-by-pitch and Schanda's double to right.
- With two outs, Ponce hit a deep infield single to short for a 3-1 advantage.
- Dubois then collected her second win of the day by inducing three straight ground outs.
