McDonnell Keys Late Rally in 3-2 BU Win over UMass

BOSTON – Highlighted by reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Matt McDonnell's second multi-goal performance in three contests, the Boston University men's soccer team rallied to defeat defending Atlantic 10 champion UMass, 3-2, on Friday night at Nickerson Field.

The Terriers (1-2-1) scored all three goals in the second half, including two within a 34-second span, to snap the Minutemen's (2-2-1) three-game unbeaten streak. Freshman Kari Petursson delivered the decisive blow at 84:09.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UMass got on the scoreboard first in the 41st minute when Jack Fulton took a quick shot at the right post off a service pass into the box.
  • Trailing at the half, the Terriers took advantage of a costly Minutemen penalty at 55:20 near the UMass goal line, as junior Satchel Cortet sent a low cross on the free kick through multiple defenders to an open McDonnell to finish off for the equalizer.
  • Seven minutes later, Brandon Merklin headed in a teammate's header set up by Fulton's cross to put UMass back ahead, 2-1, at 62:59.
  • With under seven minutes remaining in regulation, senior Josh Barkoff sent a cross from the left side of the field to sophomore Toti Knutsson, who collected the ball inside the UMass box and rifled a shot attempt saved by a diving Trey Miller.
  • McDonnell pounced on the loose rebound to tie the game again at 83:35.
  • 34 seconds later in what proved to be the game winner, Petursson brought the ball up the left side and launched a 25-yard shot at the right post over the outstretched arms of Miller.
GAME NOTES
  • McDonnell now owns five goals in the last three contests after totaling seven through his first 35 appearances as a Terrier.
  • Petursson became the first Terrier other than McDonnell to score a goal this season.
  • Knutsson has three assists this year after totaling five last season in 16 contests, while Barkoff earned his first career helper in the game.
  • BU totaled 11 shots in the second half after attempting one in the first to finish ahead, 12-7, as UMass owned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The two teams combined for 33 fouls in the hard-fought, physical contest.
  • BU is now 3-0-1 in the last four home meetings against UMass and is 9-3-2 overall at Nickerson Field under head coach Neil Roberts.
  • The Terriers moved to 1-1-1 against in-state opponents following an earlier 3-3 draw at BC and 2-0 loss to America East preseason favorite UMass Lowell with Harvard, Holy Cross and Northeastern remaining on the schedule.
NEXT UP: DARTMOUTH
  • The Terriers will kick off a three-game road trip against the Ivy League with a visit to Dartmouth on Tuesday (Sept. 11) at 5 p.m.
  • Fans will be able to watch the action on ESPN+.
