BOSTON – Competing in its first of two Turnpike Trophy matchups, the Boston University men's basketball team will host Holy Cross on Wednesday night at Case Gym with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
BU has won the last three Turnpike Trophy all-sports competitions and currently leads, 7-1, in the latest edition with the Crusaders claiming a point against women's basketball earlier this month. Besides hosting Club Sports Night, the team will also be Lacing Up 4 Pediatric Cancer to support the Go4theGoal Foundation to help kids battling cancer.TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU is 2-0 this season against in-state rivals following earlier wins against Northeastern (77-74) and UMass Lowell (79-60).
- On Saturday, redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino became the third Terrier this season to reach 20 points in a game ... He is averaging 9.4 ppg in Patriot League contests while shooting 52.9 percent from the field.
- Junior Max Mahoney is averaging a team-high 16.9 ppg and 6.2 rpg while ranking 11th nationally at 65.0 FG% ... All four of his double-doubles this season have occurred at home.
- Junior Tyler Scanlon and sophomore Javante McCoy are averaging a combined 22.8 ppg against PL opponents.
- Freshman Jonas Harper is 15-of-20 (.750) in 3-point territory during conference play, to average 7.8 ppg, while the rest of the team is a combined 30-of-128 (.234).
- Overall, BU is averaging 72.0 ppg while shooting 47.5 FG%, 53rd best mark in the country ... Opponents are being held to 72.3 ppg and 46.0 ppg, but PL teams are currently averaging 80.4 ppg and 52.7 FG%.
- 70 is a key number so far this season, as both BU and opponents are 1-7 when held below 70 points.
- The Crusaders are 6-7 away from home compared to the 6-2 home record ... They own wins at UMass and Iona with neutral-site victories against Stony Brook and Siena.
- In conference play, HC most recently snapped a three-game losing streak with a tightly-contested 69-64 win over Navy ... The other two league wins came against Lafayette and Loyola Maryland.
- 6-foot-6 forward Jacob Grandison is averaging a team-high 15.0 ppg with 6-foot-5 forward Austin Butler close behind at 13.0 ppg ... Two-time PL Player of the Week and 6-foot-8 center Jehyve Floyd is shooting a stellar 68.8 percent from the field while averaging 11.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 3.7 apg and 2.3 bpg.
- The Crusaders have one of the worst rebounding margins in the country at -7.1 rpg but make up for the large deficit by ranking 20th in turnovers allowed per game (10.8) and 39th in turnover margin (3.2) ... They also rank 13th in fewest fouls committed per game (15.1).
- HC is averaging 68.9 ppg and 47.1 FG% while holding opponents to 69.0 ppg and 45.1 FG%.
- In a series dating back to 1902-03, the Crusaders own a 53-20 advantage against the Terriers ... BU though is 7-3 since joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013.
- Both road teams won last season with the Terriers claiming a 54-40 victory at the Hart Center ... Scanlon was named the Turnpike Trophy MVP after totaling eight points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals, as the Crusaders were held to 32.6 FG%.
- In the rematch at Case Gym, Turnpike Trophy MVP Floyd was one of four Crusaders in double figures with 18 points, five rebounds and four blocks ... HC held BU to just 35.2 FG% and claimed a 14-4 advantage in points off turnovers for the 73-62 win.
