BOSTON – Taking the court for the first time since a successful overseas trip to Spain, the Boston University men's basketball team will open the 2019-20 regular season at The Roof against defending CAA champion Northeastern on Tuesday night with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.

The Terriers enter their 111th season with ninth-year head coach Joe Jones at the helm and will continue a crosstown rivalry with the Huskies that has turned into one of the nation's most exciting. Twelve of the last 13 meetings have featured a single-digit victor with three matchups requiring overtime and five being decided by three points or less. 

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers return four of the five starters from a squad that won four of its last six games.
  • Two-time All-Patriot League honoree and senior Max Mahoney is the top returning scorer (16.5 ppg) and rebounder (6.6 rpg) ... He owns a career field goal shooting percentage of 61.4, which is well ahead of the 56.3 FG% career mark held by BU Hall of Famer Jim Hayes ('70), along with nine career double-doubles.
  • Mahoney is one of just two seniors on the team alongside Adam Mikula, who appeared in four games last season.
  • Junior Javante McCoy recorded the Terriers' fifth-ever 30+ point performance in a postseason game during the 71-63 win over Loyola Maryland to finish the year at 12.1 ppg with 2.3 apg.
  • Sophomore Alex Vilarino (6.8 ppg) made 21 starts last season, while junior Sukhmail Mathon (3.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg) made 25 starts.
  • Sophomore Jonas Harper (5.2 ppg, 46.6 3FG%) became the eighth Terrier in seven years last March to claim All-PL Rookie Team accolades.
  • Sophomore and former All-PL Rookie honoree Walter Whyte missed all of 2018-19 due to injury after averaging 9.3 ppg and 5.0 rpg his freshman season.
  • Sophomore Jack Hemphill (3.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg) was one of five Terriers to average double figures during the 4-0 Spain trip at 11.3 ppg.
  • Freshman Ethan Brittain-Watts was a four-time All-State honoree in Indiana and was also named an Indiana All-Star his senior year.
  • Sophomore Garrett Pascoe and freshman Daman Tate are out for the 2019-20 season due to injury.
  • The Terriers were selected to finish fifth in the Patriot League preseason poll after finishing tied-for-seventh in the standings last year at 7-11.
  • BU finished sixth in the Patriot League last season averaging 72.3 ppg despite finishing second at 48.0 FG%, the program's highest mark since 1983-84 (48.3 FG%) ... Opponents averaged 72.3 ppg by shooting 47.1 FG%.
  • The Terriers went 7-8 at home last season with notable victories against defending PL champion Bucknell and Nicholls State. 
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
  • Selected to finish third in their preseason poll The defending CAA champion Huskies return just two starters from last year's squad that went 23-11 (14-4 CAA) and came up short to Kansas (87-53) in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
  • Preseason All-CAA second team honoree and 6-foot-1 guard Jordan Roland is the team's top-returning scorer at 14.6 ppg with the help of 99 3-pointers.
  • 6-foot-6 guard Bolden Brace was named honorable mention after averaging 9.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 2.7 apg last season. 
  • The Huskies averaged 75.8 ppg and 47.6 FG% while holding opponents to 70.8 ppg and 46.0 FG% ... They averaged 9.6 made 3-pointers with the help of 14.1 assists per game.
  • NU went 8-6 on the road compared to the 11-2 home record last season with notable non-conference wins at Harvard and Bucknell.
SERIES HISTORY
  • In a rivalry dating back to 1920-21, BU leads the all-time series, 74-73, with Northeastern having won seven of the last 10 meetings.
  • Last season at Matthews Arena, the Terriers faced a 68-59 deficit with 4:30 remaining before finishing the contest on an 18-6 run for the 77-74 victory.
  • McCoy contributed nine of his 13 points during the rally for the win, while Mahoney contributed 12 points and six rebounds, as the Huskies finished the contest 6-of-25 (.240) from behind the arc.
  • Two years ago at Case Gym, the Huskies edged BU, 65-59, despite the Terriers finishing ahead in FG% (40.4 - 40.0) ... NU went 20-of-24 at the charity stripe, while the Terriers shot 8-of-16.
