Twenty-eight players are on the roster, including 23 college standouts, and the group will be whittled down to 23 players for the final roster that will represent the United States in the 2020 World Junior Championship from Dec. 26, 2019 - Jan. 5, 2020, in Ostrava and Trinec, Czech Republic.
Both Mastrosimone and Zegras are looking to make their World Juniors debut and were each selected to participate in the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase. Zegras played at that event this past July and August but Mastrosimone was unable to take part in it due to injury.
BU has had 17 representatives on Team USA at World Juniors since 2014, which is the most of any school. Last year, Joel Farabee and Logan Cockerill earned silver medals with the U.S. at the 2019 tournament.
Zegras and Mastrosimone are the top two freshman scorers on this year's BU squad. Zegras is tied for first among Hockey East freshmen in points with 17 on five goals and 12 assists and is the only rookie in the league currently averaging over a point per game. Mastrosimone has four goals and six assists and his 10 points rank tied for fifth on the Terrier squad.
The two have combined for three Hockey East Pro Ambition Rookie of the Week honors this season with Zegras earning his second on Monday after a goal and three assists in BU's two-win week. Mastrosimone excelled as well against Harvard and Northeastern, scoring a goal in each victory.
Team USA's camp will take place in Plymouth, Michigan, on Dec. 16-17 before the group heads overseas to complete the pre-tournament training. The team will compete against Sweden in a pre-tournament matchup Dec. 22 in Cesky Tesin, Czech Republic, before facing Germany at in Havirov, Czech Republic, for a final tune-up on Dec. 23. USA Hockey expects to name the final 23-player roster for the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship by Dec. 24.
