Irving's Double-Double Not Enough as Terriers Fall to UMass, 58-45

BOSTON – Hosting a packed Case Gym for Education Day, Nia Irving posted her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the Boston University women's basketball team dropped a 58-45 decision to UMass Wednesday afternoon.

- Making her first career start, Maggie Pina got The Roof on its feet by knocking down a 3-pointer to open the game.
- BU and UMass exchanged baskets before Katie Nelson caught fire, reeling off seven straight points to put the Terriers ahead, 12-10.
- The Minutewomen swung the momentum in their favor, pulling off an 8-0 run, but four straight free throws from the Terriers cut the gap to 18-16 at the end of the first stanza.
- Trailing by four early in the second quarter, Pina nailed three straight free throws while Sydney Johnson finished off a fast break layup to put the Terriers back in the lead, 23-22, with 7:05 left in the half.
- The Minutewomen worked a 9-2 run to seize a six-point lead until Pina knocked down two more makes from the charity stripe in the closing seconds of the half to put the scoreboard at 31-27.
- Irving swayed the momentum back on the Terriers' side to start the third, netting six straight points to knot the score for the fifth time, 33-33.
- BU went cold from the floor, missing its next eight shots while UMass put in the next 10 points.
- Following going scoreless from the field for 13 minutes, Nelson got the offense back on track with a 3-pointer, while Tenisha Pressley and Pina connected on jumpers as part of a 7-2 run.
- The Terriers couldn't get closer than a 12-point margin as they dropped their fourth straight contest.
- BU went 11-for-13 from the free throw line in the first half.
- Irving's double-double was her second of the season and 17th of her career.
- Pina matched Irving with 12 points while Nelson also reached double figures with a 10-point effort.
- Maren Durant grabbed eight rebounds over 14 minutes off the bench.
- The Terriers will host another in-state rival as it welcomes Boston College to Case Gym on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m.
