Terriers Drop Heartbreaker at American, 50-48

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Leading by seven with 2:10 left in regulation against American, the Boston University women's basketball team saw its lead fade as the Eagles put in seven straight points before hitting the game-winning shot with two seconds left to hand the Terriers a 50-48 setback Wednesday morning at Bender Arena.
Lauren Spearman led the Terriers with 13 points, while Riley Childs followed with 11 to go with seven rebounds and a team-best five assists. Naiyah Thompson led all players with nine rebounds, all coming on the defensive end.

- The first quarter belonged to Spearman as she netted 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting.
- Midway through the first, Spearman got her stroke going by drilling back-to-back 3-pointers before driving through the lane for her 10th straight point to knot the score at 12-all at the end of the frame.
- Thompson hustled for the next four points for the Terriers, capped by working a give-and-go with Vanessa Edgehill to give BU its first lead of the day, 16-15, with 5:35 left in the half.
- American seized the momentum, using a 7-2 streak to take a 22-18 advantage into the break.
- Childs pulled BU within striking distance by hitting from beyond-the-arc to spark a streak of seven straight points, cutting the gap to 29-26 at the six-minute mark in the third.
- Spearman and Childs each tied the game up on makes from deep before Thompson tied the game up for the third time in the frame by taking an entry pass from Childs and rolling off a defender to put the score at 36-36 heading into the fourth.
- Nia Irving converted on an and-1 to give BU its first three-point lead, 43-40, before Katie Nelson pushed the lead to five with after making a pair from the charity stripe.
- Nelson extended the BU run to 7-0 by splitting a pair of defenders for a floater in the lane with 2:10 remaining.
- American put the game within one possession after hitting a 3-pointer with 49 ticks left to trim the deficit to 48-45.
- The Eagles picked off the Terriers at half court and went the other way for fast break layup to tie it once again, 48-48, with 27 seconds to go.
- BU missed what would be its final shot with five seconds left and American grabbed the rebound and immediately called timeout.
- Working from the baseline, Jade Edwards received the inbound pass and connected on a tough jumper from the block to extend the Eagles win streak to 13 games.
- Wednesday marked the first time in the 17-game series that the outcome has been decided by one possession.
- The Terriers turned the ball over on three of its final five possessions.
- After holding the Eagles to shoot just 38.8 (7-for-13) in the first half, American went shot 50.0 percent (11-for-22) in the second half.
- BU shot above 80.0 percent from the free throw line for the eighth time this season.
- The Terriers will host Navy on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
