Terrier Twelve - #2: Softball Repeats as PL Champions with Perfect Home Record
July 26, 2019 | General, Softball
Earning the No. 2 spot in this year's Terrier 12 is the softball team repeating as Patriot League champions after having a program-record 10 student-athletes claim All-Conference honors.
Led by fourth-year head coach Ashley Waters, BU posted the fourth most wins in team history (37) along with a perfect home record for the second time ever, matching the 2001 squad's 18-0 mark. The Terriers finished the home slate with an eight-run sixth-inning explosion to defeat Lehigh, 14-7, for their seventh conference championship in 11 years and 13th overall.
A two-time PL Player of the Year and 2019 PL Defensive Player of the Year, senior Alex Heinen (.328 avg., 10 HRs, 38 RBIs) added the PL Tournament MVP prize to her awards haul by hitting 6-for-9 with two doubles, two homers and four RBIs. She finished her collegiate career with a school-record 155 RBIs.
Sophomore Ali DuBois (23-11, 1.37 ERA) became the first Terrier to earn a second Pitcher of the Year award after BU Hall of Famer Robyn King ('01) was recognized by the America East in both 2000 and 2001. She allowed just two earned runs and eight hits in 17.1 combined innings during the PL tournament and then later pitched four no-hit innings at No. 5 national seed Florida in the opening round of the NCAAs.Both DuBois and Heinen were joined on the PL All-Tournament team by senior Madi Killebrew and freshman Emily Gant. Named Tournament MVP in 2018, Killebrew continued her impressive postseason play with the two-out go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth against Lehigh. A fellow All-PL First Team pitcher alongside DuBois, Gant tallied four strikeouts in the title game while also hitting 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Other highlights of the season included walk-off victories against Boston College, UMass Lowell and Holy Cross after Waters reached the 100-win milestone with a doubleheader sweep against Omaha and Northwestern State at Arkansas' Wooo Pig Classic. BU also claimed a pair of wins against regional rival UConn by a combined score of 16-6 and defeated defending West Coast Conference champion BYU.
