Boston College Holds Off Men's Soccer in Terrier Tailgate Battle, 1-0

BOSTON – Boston College struck early and held off a late charge to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in front of 4,415 fans as part of the 13th annual Terrier Tailgate at Nickerson Field.

With their second consecutive shutout, the Eagles improve to 2-0, while the Terriers drop to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers forced a turnover during the second minute in the midfield, allowing senior Matt McDonnell to charge down the left side into the box to shoot an attempt saved by BC keeper Giacomo Piccardo.
  • Sophomore Kari Petursson curled a free kick that was saved by Piccardo at 3:35.
  • The Eagles then played the ball toward the midfield, and BU briefly had possession but quickly turned the ball over to Kristofer Konradsson, who rifled a low 25-yard shot past a diving junior Michael Stone.
  • BU earned a corner in the 38th minute and saw Piccardo save a header attempt by McDonnell in the 43rd before entering the locker room down, 1-0.
  • Stone tallied five saves in the second stanza to keep the Terriers within striking distance.
  • Sophomore Evan Morrison's attempt sailed high over the crossbar in the 64th minute, and BU came up empty on a corner kick in the 76th.
  • The Terriers made one last charge in the final 10 minutes with four shots that forced a pair of saves from Piccardo at 82:59 and 85:43, respectively, before the horn sounded.
GAME NOTES
  • The Eagles finished with a 17-9 advantage in shot attempts and 8-2 lead in corner kicks with both keepers tallying five saves apiece.
  • A year after earning BU's first hat trick in a decade at BC, McDonnell finished with four shots, all on goal.
  • Konradsson and Amos Shapiro-Thompson led the Eagles with three shots apiece.
  • BC improved to 28-18-9 all-time in the series and is now 4-0 at the Terrier Tailgate with all four wins by one goal apiece.
