AMHERST, Mass. – Despite owning a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks, the Boston University men's soccer team came up just short at UMass, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.

Opening a season with three shutouts for the first time since 1996, the Minutemen (3-0-0) used a 78th minute goal to improve to 3-0-0 and hand the Terriers (0-3-0) their third 1-0 defeat of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU earned its first corner in the fourth minute but was unable to attempt a shot.
The Minutemen attempted the game's first four shots with Quinn Serafino hitting the post at 19:06.
Senior Matt McDonnell went right wide at 23:49 on a header and had a shot saved by Marvyn Dorchin at 31:11
Unable to attempt a shot in the final 23 minutes of the first half, UMass went wide twice and had another shot blocked in the first four minutes of the second half.
The Terriers withstood the offensive attack and had a pair of corners at 59:02 and 61:05, respectively.
McDonnell's shot was blocked following a UMass corner in the 76th minute.
Nathaniel Cardoza broke the scoreless deadlock at 77:38 by pouncing on the ball off junior Michael Stone and scoring quickly during the scramble.
BU had back-to-back corners in the 82nd minute, but UMass' backline was able to block sophomore Gent Celaj's shot attempt.
The Terriers had one last gasp in the 89th minute, as junior Elias Lampis headed a shot wide left and Dorchin saved another header from McDonnell.
The save led to BU's seventh corner kick of the game, but UMass was able to clear the ball to seal the victory.

GAME NOTES

BU earned a season-high 10 shot attempts and held UMass to a season-low 11 shots.
McDonnell led the Terriers with four shots, while sophomore Kari Petursson tallied two.
Stone had one save, and Dorchin had two for UMass.
After avenging last year's 3-2 defeat at BU, UMass is now 23-18-7 all-time in the series.

NEXT UP: MERRIMACK

The Terriers will return home to face their third straight in-state opponent, Merrimack, on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. start time.
Already a winner at Northeastern, Merrimack made the jump up to Division I this past summer and is now a member of the Northeast Conference.
Though both schools' hockey programs are in the Hockey East, the contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the two men's soccer programs.
