UMass Lowell Outlasts Men's Soccer in Double Overtime, 2-1
September 14, 2019 | Men's Soccer
LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Matt McDonnell netted his 14th-career goal and junior Michael Stone tallied eight saves, but it wasn't enough to avoid heartbreak, as UMass Lowell struck in the 110th minute to defeat the Boston University men's soccer team, 2-1, on a rainy Saturday night at Cushing Field.
With their third multi-goal performance of the season, the River Hawks moved to 2-2-1, while the Terriers fell to 0-5-0 after competing in their first overtime game of the season.

With their third multi-goal performance of the season, the River Hawks moved to 2-2-1, while the Terriers fell to 0-5-0 after competing in their first overtime game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stone started with saves in the second and 11th minutes, respectively, to keep the River Hawks off the scoreboard.
- Attempting to clear the ball in their third of the field, the Terriers turned it over to the River Hawks, who found Dario Jovanovski at 40:33 for a 25-yard shot inside the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
- The Terriers dominated possession for most of the second half and continued to pressure UML's backline, including a shot from McDonnell at 70:26 that forced a save by Patrik Gujic.
- BU eventually drew a foul in the box at 77:10 after Gujic made another save, and McDonnell converted on the penalty kick for the equalizer.
- The Terriers earned a corner in the final minute of regulation but was unable to get a shot off, as UML went on the counter and sent an attempt wide just before the buzzer sounded.
- In the first overtime, BU pressured UML's backline again over the final two minutes and nearly took the win when freshman Owen Murray rifled a shot just over the crossbar from outside the box.
- The River Hawks were on the attack in the final minutes of the second overtime and took advantage of a BU turnover in the 110th minute.
- After UML was fouled trying to loft a pass toward the right corner, Jovanovski sent a free kick into the box for Roko Prsa to head in past Stone with just 29 seconds left in the game.
- McDonnell was one of seven Terriers to play all 110 minutes and finished with a game-high seven shot attempts.
- UMass Lowell finished with a 19-14 advantage in shots, as the teams finished in a 6-6 deadlock in corner kicks.
- The River Hawks evened the all-time series at 4-4-0 after winning the first overtime meeting between the two programs and are now on a three-game win streak.
- The Terriers will remain on the road and visit Brown on Wednesday (Sept. 18) with a 7 p.m. start time.
- The Bears have won the last two meetings by an identical score of 2-1.
