Kristin and Stephen Fleagle Join Track & Field Staff

September 17, 2019

Kristin Fleagle and her husband Stephen will join the Boston University track & field program as assistant coaches, director of track & field and cross country Gabe Sanders announced this week.

Kristin was named jumps coach while Stephen will serve as pole vault coach.

"Something that was really important to me in this search was not just about 'x's and o's' and coaching accolades alone, which Kristin and Stephen both have an impressive resume, but how in tune is someone with true student-athletes, especially those here at Boston University," said Sanders. "I was approached by and inquired with many top-level coaches around the country, and all roads led back to Kristin and Stephen. They have a true understanding of coaching the complete person and working with their athletes to reach their highest potential, on and off the track. They are a perfect fit with the direction this program is going and who we want to be. They have proven success working with elite NCAA athletes who are driven to succeed at a high level both athletically and academically. With their addition to our staff we are ready to bring Boston University track and field to new heights."

Before joining the Terriers, Kristin was an assistant coach at Luther College for the 2018-19 season overseeing the training of jumps and throws while helping the combined event athletes in those respected events. During her first year at Luther she coached one all-conference high jumper, guided two women to all-time top 10 performances in the hammer throw and one to an all-time top 10 in the weight throw.

During the 2017-18 track and field season she was the associate head coach at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois where she oversaw the training for long, triple, high jump, and the combined events. During her time there the men's team placed 6th indoors and 4th outdoors at the NCAAs. She guided Luther Newborn to his second NCAA championship in the triple jump while also coaching him to first appearances in the long and high jump at the NCAAs. During the indoor season she coached two men to All-American performances in the Long jump (5th) and the triple jump (3rd).

At the conference level the jumps were dominated under her coaching as her men won individual titles in 6 out of 6 jumping events indoor and outdoor while grabbing 11 all-conference performances.

Kristin's coaching career began in 2014 at the University of Wisconsin-Steven's Point where she served as a graduate assistant from 2014-2016 and as an assistant coach in 2017 overseeing long, triple, and high jump. During those coached 7 jumpers to NCAAs in 28 showings to collect 15 All-American awards and 1 NCAA champion. She coached 24 all-conference men's and women's performances and 8 individual champions. In 2016 she had the number 1 men's LJ program in Division III with 5 men having performances over 7 meters.

As a student at Carthage College she was a biology major with a psychology minor graduating in 2014. As an athlete she was a 16x all-conference performer with a conference title in the long jump and a 2014 appearance at the indoor NCAA championships as the lead off for her team's 4x4.

Before joining the Terriers, Stephen Fleagle served as the head coach at Luther College for the 2019 season after serving as an assistant at the University of Chicago from 2012-2019. While at University of Chicago, Stephen helped coach 11 athletes and 7 relays to 31 NCAA national meet appearances that led to 10 All-American honors. In 2014 he helped guide pole vaulter Michael Bennett to an undefeated season and a national championship at the NCAA III Indoor National Championships and a runner-up finish at the Outdoor National Championships.

Stephen also coached four different women at national meets in the high jump with three competing and placing in the top half of the field at the 2018 NCAA outdoor championships.

Prior to coaching at University of Chicago he was an assistant coach for cross country and track and field at North Central from 2010-12. Stephen graduated from North Central College with a degree in exercise science and a minor in wellness in 2008.
