Men's Basketball Rides Hot Shooting to 81-59 Win over Army West Point

BOSTON – Shooting a season-high 60.7 percent from the field with the help of sophomore Walter Whyte's double-double and senior Max Mahoney's near triple-double performance, the Boston University men's basketball team claimed an 81-59 victory over Army West Point on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
The bench played a key role too with with their highest offensive production (24 pts.) against a Division I opponent this season, as the Terriers (9-8, 3-1 PL) extended their home win streak to six games, BU's longest since 2012-13. Held below 40 percent shooting for just the second time this season, the Black Knights (5-10, 0-4 PL) entered the matchup dropping their first three Patriot League meetings by a combined 17 points, including a 67-65 loss at 2019 PL runner-up Bucknell and 70-65 loss to defending champion Colgate.
Whyte went 4-of-6 in 3-point territory en route to 16 points while adding a career-high 12 rebounds for his third career double-double. Mahoney shot 8-of-12 and added two free throws for a game-high 18 points. He dished out a personal-best eight assists, topping Wednesday's previous high of six in an 84-67 win over Lehigh, and added nine rebounds to help the Terriers win the battle at the boards, 39-22. Junior Javante McCoy (11 pts.) and sophomore Jack Hemphill (10 pts.) reached double figures as well.

TURNING POINT
- Previously overcoming a double-digit deficit in the first half, Matt Willson hit a layup to pull Army within five (55-50) at 10:23 in the second.
- Mahoney then set up McCoy for a 3-pointer that sparked an 18-3 run capped by Whyte's thunderous slam dunk with 4:16 remaining.
- The Black Knights went 1-of-7 during the game-changing run with three turnovers.
- Hemphill gave BU its largest lead of the game (81-59) with an offensive rebound and putback with 35 seconds left.
- The Terriers hit their first seven shot attempts with Hemphill flushing back-to-back 3-pointers for an early 17-9 lead at 14:12.
- Hemphill shortly there after had a tip-in for BU's first-double digit lead (19-9) of the contest.
- Mahoney later helped set up sophomore Fletcher Tynen's 3-pointer and then was repaid in kind on a layup for a 27-12 lead at 11:26.
- The Black Knights fought their way back and scored the game's next 16 points over a seven minute stretch of time with the help of three 3-pointers.
- After Tucker Blackwell went 1-of-2 at the line for the 28-27 advantage, sophomore Jonas Harper set up Whyte's 3-pointer and then forced a turnover on Patriot League assist leader Tommy Funk (6.4 apg) to help McCoy score on a layup.
- Junior Sukhmail Mathon netted his own layup attempt on the Terriers' final possession to put BU ahead at the half, 36-31.
- The Black Knights cut their deficit to three on six occasions but were unable to get closer, as BU shot 65.5 FG% during the final 20 minutes of action.
- Whyte topped his previous high of 11 rebounds set against Lehigh his freshman year on Jan. 8, 2018.
- With 18 points, Mahoney moved to 1,300 for his career, surpassing both John Papale ('16) and Cedric Hankerson ('18) for the No. 13 slot.
- Mahoney averaged 20.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 7.0 apg and 70.8 FG% in a successful two-game homestand.
- Hemphill reached double figures for the fourth time in his career and first time since tallying 10 points at home vs. Army one year prior.
- BU finished above 50.0 percent from behind the arc for the first time this season, shooting 8-of-15 (.533).
- The Terriers avenged last season's sweep to Army and improved to 18-11 all-time in the series.
- The Terriers will have a quick turnaround and fly south to Baltimore for a 7 p.m. tip on Monday night against the Greyhounds on the CBS Sports Network.
- BU eliminated the Greyhounds in the PL first round this past March, 71-63.
- The home team has won the last eight meetings between the two schools.
