Terriers Erase 18-Point Deficit, Take Down Holy Cross 76-70 in OT

BOSTON –  Trailing by 18 points midway through the second quarter, the Boston University women's basketball stormed back to take down Holy Cross in overtime, 76-70, Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

Maggie Pina led all scorers with 23 points, netting 10 of those in the extra frame. Maren Durant was stellar once again, posting her second double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Nelson contributed 17 points, while Sydney Johnson also reached double figures with 13 points.

How It Happened
  • Pina got The Roof on its feet early with a coast-to-coast finish in transition to put the score at four-all two minutes in.
  • From there, Holy Cross attacked the paint, shooting 78.6 percent from the floor to stake a 25-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
  • Johnson caught fire early in the second quarter, roping seven straight points, and Nelson kept the tempo up with five straight of her own to make it a 10-point game with just over a minute left in the second quarter.
  • Pina hit a momentum-shifting buzzer-beater triple from the wing to cut the deficit to 38-31 at the break.
  • Nelson exploded for back-to-back 3-pointers within a 12-second span to make it a one-point game less than a minute into the third.
  • Following a 6-0 Crusader run, BU erupted for a 13-0 streak, using a Pina triple to take the lead before Tenisha Pressley followed with a jumper from the elbow to put the score at 49-46 with 1:48 remaining in the frame.
  • Holy Cross answered with two quick layups to claim a 50-49 edge at the end of the third.
  • Durant kicked off the fourth quarter with two straight makes in the post, putting the Terriers back on top, 53-50.
  • Pressley banked in a 3-pointer to give BU its largest lead of the game, 61-57, but Holy Cross answered with a 7-0 streak to go up by three with 30 seconds remaining.
  • Pina came through in the clutch with a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to send the game into overtime as the score held at 64-all
  • The freshman remained on fire, scoring the first eight Terrier points in the extra frame to put the scoreboard at 72-66 with 1:18 left.
Game Notes
  • Saturday's comeback is BU's largest since overcoming a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit at Lehigh in 2016.
  • It also marked the first overtime game between BU and Holy Cross as the Terriers snapped a three-game skid in the series.
  • All 12 of BU's points in overtime were scored by freshmen.
  • Pina was named the Turnpike Trophy MVP.
