No. 16 BU Edged by Merrimack, 3-2
October 22, 2021 | Men's Ice Hockey
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - Junior Wilmer Skoog scored a career-high two goals, but the No. 16 Boston University men's ice hockey team suffered a 3-2 setback at Merrimack on Friday night at Lawler Rink.
Junior Ethan Phillips assisted on both of Skoog's strikes, with classmate Domenick Fensore providing his team-leading fifth assist of the season on the Terriers' opening goal. Sophomore Drew Commesso made 28 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors struck first just 9:14 into the proceedings.
- Skoog evened the score at 13:56 of the first when he moved to the front of the net, screened the goalie and redirected Fensore's shot into the back of the net for a power-play goal.
- Commesso came up big early in the second period when he went post-to-post to deny a Merrimack player from a sure goal on a wraparound attempt.
- Junior Matt Brown had a shorthanded breakaway attempt with 6:40 to go in the stanza, but Zachary Borgiel (18 saves) closed the five-hole just in time to deny Brown.
- Skoog gave BU a 2-1 lead with 4:00 remaining in the period. He began the sequence by rushing up ice and into the Merrimack zone. Skoog's pass to Phillips was off-target, but Phillips got to the loose puck in the corner. As Merrimack's defense converged on Phillips, Skoog smartly skated to the front of the net. Phillips got a wide-open Skoog the puck and the Sweden native made no mistake for his second goal of the game.
- Merrimack tied the score with 1:29 to go in the second and then took the lead at 6:31 of the third.
- BU pulled Commesso in favor of an extra attacker and nearly equalized in the final seconds, but freshman Tyler Boucher redirected the puck into the net with a high stick and the goal was immediately waved off by the referee.
- BU remained perfect on the penalty kill this season thanks to a 3-for-3 effort on Friday.
- The Terriers are 19-for-19 on the PK this year and have killed 23 straight penalties dating back to last season.
- Skoog has scored three goals over the last two games and is on a three-game point streak.
- Phillips recorded his first two-assist game since he did it in his NCAA debut on Oct. 5, 2019, at Union.
- Friday was Phillips' second straight two-point effort; he has totaled all five of his points this year over the last three tilts.
- Fensore leads BU in both assists (5) and points (6).
- Like Skoog and Phillips, Fensore is on a three-game point streak.
- BU and Merrimack will conclude this weekend's series on Saturday night at Agganis Arena.
- Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
