Terriers Stymie Merrimack Offense in 0-0 Draw

BOSTON – Highlighted by senior MIchael Stone's four saves, the Boston University men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw at Merrimack on Monday afternoon.
The Terriers (0-3-1) finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 13-12 overall edge in attempts, as the Warriors (0-3-1) were shut out at home for the first time in nine contests dating back to 2019. Alvaro Rodriguez tallied seven saves to keep BU off the scoreboard.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Terriers (0-3-1) finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 13-12 overall edge in attempts, as the Warriors (0-3-1) were shut out at home for the first time in nine contests dating back to 2019. Alvaro Rodriguez tallied seven saves to keep BU off the scoreboard.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers pressured early with a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes.
- Merrimack went right of the post with a quick touch off a low cross in the ninth minute and later forced a diving save from Stone in the 14th minute.
- Junior Colin Innes had a look in the 29th minute while being pressured and sent a low shot that was stopped by the keeper.
- Sophomore Aidan Holmes forced Rodriguez to make two more saves in the final 10 minutes of the half, as the game went to the half scoreless.
- Junior Griffin Roach nearly put the game away in the 87th minute when he sent a low grounder just inches left of the post from eight yards out.
- The teams went back-and-forth in the extra periods, earning two corner kicks apiece, but neither team could find the back of the net for the draw.
- Senior Gianluca Arlotti tallied a game-high four shot attempts, including three on net.
- Both sophomore Aidan Bone and freshman Andrew Soczynski earned their first career starts.
- Stone earned his third career solo shutout as a Terrier after combining for one this past spring and claiming two in 2019.
- The teams combined for eight offsides rulings with BU being flagged five times after totaling three calls through the first three games.
- BU made its first-ever visit to Merrimack after dropping a 3-0 decision at Nickerson Field in 2019.
- BU will leave Massachusetts for the first time and visit St. John's Friday night with a 7 p.m. start time.
- The two squads last met six times between 2008 and 2012.
