WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Sydney Johnson recorded 13 points, and classmate Maren Durant added 12 points and eight rebounds, but the third-seeded Boston University women's basketball team could not overcome No. 2 American in a 70-48 loss in the Patriot League Semifinals on Thursday evening at Bender Arena.

With the result, the Eagles advance to the Patriot League championship game against No. 4 Bucknell on Sunday (Mar. 13), while the Terriers are eliminated from Patriot League championship contention.

Trailing by as much as 20 points in the second quarter, BU (17-14) was able to cut the deficit to 11 with 5:10 remaining in the game. However, the Eagles (22-8) coaxed 21 Terriers turnovers, and forced the visitors to shoot 3-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Johnson also notched three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Caitlin Weimar turned in eight points, seven boards, and two blocks.

Emily Fisher paced American with 25 points, five rebounds, and four assists, Ten different Eagles found the bottom of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Durant made two layups in the first seven minutes, but American went ahead 10-6 in that span, forcing eight turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
From the 2:24 mark of the first quarter to 3:57 left in the second, the Eagles went on a 17-2 extended run, with contributions from five different players.
BU went on a 7-0 in the next 2:42, as Weimar converted a layup from junior Liz Shean's pass, and Johnson knocked down three foul shots and an and-one bucket to close the gap to 29-16.
Johnson kept the Terrier deficit to 14 on a pair of baskets inside the arc within the first four minutes of the third.
BU trailed 41-27 with under two minutes left in the frame, but American ended the third on a 6-0 run, capped with Karla Vres' buzzer-beating three.
Sophomore Sophie Beneventine made the Terriers' first triple at the 6:05 mark of the fourth quarter.
Trailing 55-38 with 5:37 to play, BU got within 11 at 55-44 when freshman Alex Giannaros and junior Maggie Pina buried threes from the wings.
Pina made a contested layup by the left block with 4:44 to go, but that served as the Terriers' last field goal. American closed the game on a 13-2 run.

GAME NOTES

As a team, BU shot 35.4 percent from the field.
American shot .411, including 7-for-21 from three-point range.
Rebounding favored the Terriers, 35-32. BU won the glass in 24 of their 31 games this season.
The Terriers outscored the Eagles 26-24 in the paint.
Johnson, an All-Patriot League First Team selection, has averaged 15.7 points per game, the most by a Terrier since Chantell Alford scored 16.4 points per game in the 2012-13 campaign.
Durant has 9.0 rebounds per game and 52 blocks on the season, which are the seventh-highest amounts in a single season.
In two Patriot League Tournament games, Weimar averaged 14.5 points and 10 rebounds on 11-of-16 (.688) shooting.
Shean has hit 46.1 percent of her three-pointers this season, the fourth-best percentage by a Terrier.
Senior Riley Childs has averaged 7.3 rebounds in her four-year career, which ranks top-five all-time in the BU annals.
Senior Chiara Tibbitt has set career-highs this season with 26 games played, establishing personal records in points, rebounds, and three-pointers.
As a team, BU matched a program-high with 12 Patriot League wins, and set a team record by starting PL action with six consecutive wins.
