ANNAPOLIS, Md. – In a Patriot League overtime semifinal thriller that featured 16 lead changes and 11 ties, the No. 3 seeded Boston University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 85-80 decision at No. 2 Navy on Sunday evening.
After graduate student
Javante McCoy tied the game with a 3-pointer on consecutive offensive possessions to end regulation, the Midshipmen (21-10) shot 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe to outlast the Terriers (21-12) in the extra session.
McCoy finished with a career-tying 30 points to become the fourth Terrier in program history and ninth Patriot League player to eclipse 1,900 career points, while both graduate student
Sukhmail Mathon (14) and junior
Ethan Brittain-Watts (career-tying 13) scored in double figures. Senior
Fletcher Tynen posted a career-tying nine rebounds alongside seven points, and classmate
Jonas Harper recorded three steals with eight points. The Terriers ended the contest 27-of-62 (.435) to become the first opponent in 13 games to shoot over 43 percent against a Navy squad that ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense (59.0 ppg) and 29th in defensive FG% (40.1). BU's six turnovers were the fewest forced by the Midshipmen this season, as they entered the game averaging 13.7 forced miscues.
Both John Carter Jr. and Greg Summers earned 21 points apiece for Navy with Summers adding a team-high six rebounds and five assists. The Midshipmen out-rebounded BU, 42-32, to finish with a 13-5 advantage in second-chance points and shot 20-of-25 (.800) at the free throw line despite averaging 64.9 FT% on the season. Navy also outscored the Terriers in the paint, 34-24, and in offensive bench production, 43-13.
OVERTIME
- McCoy opened BU's third overtime game of the season with two FTs for BU's last lead of the game, 70-68, as Summers responded with a pair of 3-point plays.
- After Brittain-Watts hit two FTs of his own, Carter and McCoy exchanged two 3-pointers apiece to put Navy's lead at 80-78 with under a minute to play.
- Jaylen Walker hit a jumper on the next possession, and the Mids added three more free throws over the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
DOWN THE STRETCH
- After Mathon hit a short jumper for a 60-59 lead with 2:18 left, the Terriers earned back-to-back defensive stops but came up empty on consecutive possessions.
- Richard Njoku followed with a dunk, and the Mids netted four straight free throws to pull ahead, 65-60, with 22 seconds remaining.
- Following two free throws apiece from both teams, McCoy flushed a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 67-65 at nine seconds.
- The Terriers fouled immediately, and Sean Yoder went 1-of-2 at the line, leading to McCoy's game-tying bomb with four seconds remaining.
THE SETUP
- After Mathon's jumper led to an early 6-5 lead, Walker sparked an 8-0 spurt capped by Christian Silva's layup at 12:04.
- Carter's layup pushed Navy's lead to 17-9 at 9:04.
- The Terriers chipped away and pulled within one, 20-19, on Harper's 3-pointer at 5:02.
- Daniel Deaver followed summers' jumper with a 3-point play to pull ahead, 27-21, at 2:47.
- Mathon's jumper at 1:48 marked the final bucket of the half, as Navy entered the locker room leading, 27-23.
- Carter started the second half with a 3-pointer, but the Terriers scored seven straight on sophomore Miles Brewster's layup, McCoy's layup and Harper's 3-pointer at 17:27.
- Brittain-Watts eventually grabbed BU's first lead of the second half, 40-39, on a layup at 12:01.
- Neither team led by more than three until Yoder gave Navy a 65-60 lead on two free throws at 22 seconds.
GAME NOTES
- With a career-high 12 field goals on 24 attempts, Javante McCoy moved past BU Hall of Famer Drederick Irving ('88) for No. 3 all-time at 721 buckets, two shy of John Holland ('11).
- McCoy's 585 points this season are No. 8 all-time at BU. His 199 career treys are seventh most, and his 375 assists are ninth most.
- Mathon moved up to No. 4 at BU with 337 rebounds this season and No. 7 at 79 career blocks.
- The game marked the first time this season BU was tied with five minutes to go in regulation.
- BU dropped to 0-3 this season in overtime games and to 17-9 all-time in conference semifinals.
