Terrier Twelve - #10: Men's Ice Hockey Wins 31st Beanpot Title

July 5, 2022

Returning for a 14th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 10 on this year's countdown is the men's ice hockey team, which claimed the program's 31st Beanpot championship during its 100th season with a 1-0 victory over Northeastern.

BU advanced to its sixth Beanpot title game in the last seven tournaments with a 4-3 victory over Harvard in the opening round. In a rematch of the 2020 Beanpot final, BU faced No. 13 Northeastern in what proved to be a defensive battle. With the teams destined for overtime, sophomore Dylan Peterson rushed to the right post and converted a beautiful cross-crease feed from junior Jamie Armstrong to give BU a 1-0 lead with 2:46 remaining in regulation.

Sophomore goaltender Vinny Duplessis and the Terrier defense held off a late Northeastern rally to secure the victory, with Duplessis finishing with a 19-save shutout. Peterson, who was terrific all night leading up to his game-winning goal, earned Beanpot MVP honors for his heroics.

The win extended the Terriers' win streak to seven games and was part of an impressive 15-3-1 record to close out the regular season. Three Terrier juniors - Domenick Fensore, Wilmer Skoog and Alex Vlasic - were named Hockey East Second Team All-Stars while freshman defenseman Ty Gallagher garnered Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors for his strong debut season.

Fensore, who was named captain of the 2022-23 Terriers, led all league blue liners with 26 assists and his 31 points ranked second among Hockey East defenders. Skoog scored a career-high 15 goals to lead the team and was second on the squad with 30 points. Vlasic was one of the best defensive defensemen in the league and became the 91st Terrier to play in the NHL when he made his debut with the Chicago Blackhawks in March. Gallagher notched 16 points (5g, 11a) and also led all league rookies with 44 blocked shots during the regular season.

Sophomore Drew Commesso made history at the Olympics when he became the youngest goaltender to start for the U.S. Men's Olympic Team. He was great in that debut appearance, stopping all 29 shots he saw in an 8-0 win over China. Commesso then made 24 saves in his only other start, a 3-2 win over Germany that helped the U.S. finish undefeated in preliminary-round play. He finished the tournament with a .963 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average; both marks ranked second among all goalies who made at least two appearances.

A new era of Terrier hockey will be underway in 2022-23, as Jay Pandolfo ('95) was named the program's new head coach in May.
