August 11, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Boston University men's tennis sophomore Cole Knutsen will compete in the 2022 ITA Tennis-Point National Summer Championships powered by Universal Tennis starting Friday morning at Florida State after finishing fifth overall in the Summer Circuit Points Race.
The Tulsa, Oklahoma, native compiled 575 points with the help of a Summer Circuit title win at Wichita State and runner-up finish at Washburn University. He also reached the round of 16 at the Battle of Boston Qualifying Open Tournament in Milton.
The Circuit was held over six weekends across 26 states, beginning mid-June and continuing through July. The top-five finishers in the point standings all earned a wild card berth to the National Summer Championships, which will take place Aug. 12-16 and feature a 64-player draw with the majority of the field being current collegiate athletes. The winner will claim a spot in the ITA Men's All-American Championships (Oct. 1-9 in Tulsa, Oklahoma).
Knutsen won a pair of super tiebreakers along with a straight-sets singles match to reach the final at Washburn's Kossover Tennis Center on June 18-19. He then cruised to four straight-set singles wins at Wichita State's Coleman Tennis Complex, including a 6-4, 6-2 win in the final against Daniel Harkin from Kansas Wesleyan.
The Summer Circuit powered by Universal Tennis provides an opportunity for incoming first-year student-athletes and current collegiate players to compete in the summer months. Due to NCAA compliance purposes, the events are categorized as "open," meaning anyone – including high-level juniors and adults – is eligible to compete.
