AMHERST, Mass. – The Boston University field hockey team opened the scoring but was unable to hold off No. 20 Massachusetts as the Minutewomen posted a 3-1 victory on Monday evening at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.
Junior
Tess Csejka broke a scoreless tie in the early stages of the second half when she scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
UMass got a quick equalizer and took the lead soon after before securing the victory.
BU moves to 3-5 on the year while the Minutewomen improve to 6-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening half.
- Senior Caroline Kelly made two saves in the BU goal in each of the first two quarters.
- Late in the second quarter BU created a numbers advantage and used it to put three shots on goal but a UMass defensive save preceded a pair of stops by netminde Mytre van Herwijnen.
- The Terriers came out of the gate strong in the second half and were rewarded just 1:16 into the third quarter as graduate student Casey Thompson found Csejka on the left side of the circle, where the junior snuck a shot past van Herwijnen and into the back of the cage.
- The lead was short-lived, however, as the Minutewomen quickly earned a corner on the other end and used it to come up with an equalizer.
- Claire Danahy redirected an offering from Mali Herberhold high into the netting at 33:43 to make it a 1-1 contest.
- The home team was opportunistic and suddenly found itself in the lead when Steph Gottwais scored at the 37:15 mark.
- BU continued to come up with chances the remainder of the game but could not get another shot past the UMass defense.
- The Minutewomen got an insurance goal in the 52nd minute when Herberhold and Dahahy connected again off a corner.
- With just over six minutes to play, lightning moved into the area and caused what ended up being a 90-minute delay.
- When play resumed, BU pulled goalkeeper Kate Thomason in favor of another field player and used an aggressive press to create a few more opportunities, including four corners.
- UMass held off the late spurt and sealed the two-goal win.
