Terriers Grind Out Road Win Over Raiders, 58-44

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Caitlin Weimar posted a 23-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead the Boston University women's basketball program to its ninth-straight win, beating Colgate on the road 58-44 on Wednesday evening at Cotterell Court.

BU (14-6, 9-0 PL) trailed at halftime by one point, but dropped 23 points on the Raiders (10-10, 4-5 PL) in the third quarter, overcoming its lowest three-point shooting percentage of the season for its eighth league win of 10 or more points.

In addition to her double-double, Weimar led the team with two blocks and two steals. Senior Maren Durant followed with eight points and seven boards., while classmate Sydney Johnson dished out five assists.

Tiasia McMillan and Lindsay Blackmore each posted 10 points to pace Colgate.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU's first 10 points came via Durant and Weimar, the latter sinking a right-handed floater near the right block to put BU ahead 10-6 with 4:17 left in the first.
A layup from freshman Sam Crispe and a Weimar free throw in the final minute spaced out the Terrier advantage to 15-11 after the opening 10 minutes.
Sophomore Alex Giannaros canned a three from the left wing, then a turnaround jumper from junior Sophie Beneventine and a second-chance layup for Weimar coaxed a Colgate timeout 1:42 into the second, with BU on top 22-13.
The Terriers ran cold the rest of the stanza, however. Not scoring from the 6:57 mark to 4:17, the Raiders tied the game at 24-24 on a Tiasia McMillan basket.
Sophia Diehl nailed a jumper with 24 seconds on the timer to hand Colgate its first lead since the game's first possession, making it 28-27 at halftime.
After Johnson's first bucket of the game was met by two Christina Midgette free throws, BU rattled off an 11-0 run over a four-minute span. Weimar scored the first six points of the run, then senior Maggie Pina drained a three-pointer and a layup to stake the Terriers to a 40-30 lead.
Sophomore Lauren Davenport nailed a pair of foul shots and banked in a contested floater with 2:08 left in the third, putting BU ahead 44-33.
The Terriers entered the fourth quarter on top, 50-37, after Johnson picked off Diehl's pass and drove down the left lane for a layup.
Durant converted two baskets to ignite the fourth quarter, then Pina utilized a backdoor cut for a wide-open layup three minutes into the frame to hand BU its largest lead of the game, 56-39.
Both teams combined for just two field goals the rest of the way.

STATS

BU shot 47.8 percent in the game, including 20-for-33 (60.6 percent) inside the arc.
Colgate was held to 32.7 percent shooting.
The Terriers won the rebounding battle, 42-24. Ten different Terriers had one board.
BU also set a season-high with 16 offensive caroms, led by Weimar's four.
Weimar shot 8-for-11 in the game.
The Terriers sported a 34-18 advantage in points in the paint and 17-2 in second-chance points.

GAME NOTES

Weimar matched her career-high in points, with 23 also coming at Lafayette on Jan. 5. She has scored in double figures in all eight of her Patriot League appearances after nine such performances a season ago.
Johnson tallied her seventh game this season with five or more assists. She is now six away from 300 in her career.
Wednesday was just BU's second win this year when trailing at halftime. The Terriers overcame a deficit on Jan. 8 against American.
The victory was also the first for BU when scoring fewer than 60 points in a game.
The Terriers are now +97 in third quarters this season, outscoring foes 372-275. That is the largest difference among the four quarters.
BU improves to 18-9 all-time against Colgate, winning six of the last seven matchups.
With Holy Cross' overtime loss to Lehigh, BU is now alone atop the Patriot League standings with its 9-0 record.
