Terriers Notch 4-2 Victory Over Leopards

BOSTON – Four different Terriers found the back of the net to set a season-high in scoring for the Boston University women's soccer program, as BU defeated Lafayette 4-2 on Saturday evening at Nickerson Field.

The Terriers (6-4-3, 3-1-1 PL) scored the match's first three goals, and led by multiple goals over the Leopards (6-5-1, 2-3-0 PL) the entire second half. Thanks to the men's soccer team's 4-1 triumph over Navy hours before, BU secured a Soc'toberFest doubleheader sweep.

Senior Abigail McNulty and sophomores Natalie Godoy, Giulianna Gianino, and Natalie Godoy found the back of the net for the Terriers. Senior Lily Matthews and junior Morgan Fagan picked up assists, while junior Celia Braun totaled four saves.

Katrina Santelli and Rory Schauder scored for Lafayette, with the former tallying three points. Lindsay Dewar made five saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers broke the ice in the 11th minute as Matthews' free kick from the top-right corner of the box met Godoy's header from eight yards out, with the chance rolling into the lower-left corner.
  • Earning a Lafayette corner kick in the 22nd minute, Santelli headed the ball over the crossbar.
  • Gianino extended the Terrier lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute, as she intercepted a Lafayette pass along the back line and walked into the box alone to beat Dewar to the lower-right corner.
  • Freshman Ciara Kennedy nearly tallied her first-career goal on a corner kick insert in the 34th minute, but a Lafayette team save on the goal line kept the score 2-0.
  • Braun made her first save with 29 seconds left in the first half, snaring Sara Oswald's try at the left post.
  • Fagan fended off two challenges from Leopard markers at midfield in the 54th minute to lead McNulty, who stayed onside, down the left sideline. She collected to bury a shot in the lower-left corner for a 3-0 advantage.
  • BU nearly went ahead 4-0 in the 62nd minute, but McNulty was waved offside trying to pot a rebound attempt.
  • Lafayette got on the board on a free kick just outside the box. Schauder's try was blocked, but the rebound found its way to Santelli for the finish in the 66th minute.
  • Ten minutes later, BU's lead returned to three when Stickelman shook off multiple Leopards atop the box and whipped a right-footed shot into the upper-right pocket of the goal.
  • Lafayette was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute, with Schauder sending one past Braun.
  • Matthews nearly scored with 14 seconds left when a 20-yard shot rang off the crossbar.
STATS
  • BU posted a 19-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-6 total in shots on target.
