Holy Cross Outlasts Men's Basketball on Buzzer Beater, 71-69

WORCESTER, Mass. – Despite earning two double-doubles, the Boston University men's basketball team came up just short at Holy Cross, 71-69, on Wednesday night.

In a contest featuring 10 lead changes, the Crusaders (10-18, 7-8 PL) in-bounded the ball with 1.7 seconds remaining in regulation to Bo Montgomery, who hit the game winner against the Terriers (12-16, 5-10 PL) on a turnaround jumper after previously being blocked seconds earlier by freshman Otto Landrum on a layup attempt.

Landrum totaled a BU season-high four blocks while earning his first career double-double on 10 points and personal-best 10 rebounds. Graduate student Walter Whyte posted a team-high 17 points with 10 rebounds for the other double-double. Classmate Jonas Harper netted 16 points, and junior Anthony Morales scored 11. 

Four of the Crusaders' five starters finished in double figures with Joe Octave earning 18 points and seven rebounds. Montgomery finished at 16 points, while Gerrale Gates earned 12 points alongside a team-high eight rebounds. Nolan Dorsey added 11 points, six rebounds and three assists. Overall, Holy Cross posted a 7-4 advantage in made 3-pointers and 10-5 lead in made free throws to claim the regular season sweep.

DOWN THE STRETCH
  • Facing a 56-40 deficit with 11:50 remaining, the Terriers scored six straight as part of a 14-2 run capped by Whyte's layup at 7:48.
  • Dorsey flushed a 3-pointer for a 63-56 lead with 5:16 remaining, but Morales responded with a 3-pointer and slam dunk to cut the deficit to two.
  • Down 66-63 with 3:30 left, Landrum scored on a putback and then had two blocks that led to Harper's layup and the Terriers' first lead of the second half.
  • Dorsey came right back with a 3-pointer and Landrum scored again on a putback to tie the game for the fourth and final time, 69-69, at 2:14.
  • The Terriers had multiple chances to grab the lead following Whyte's steal and Harper's block, but BU missed its final six shot attempts.
  • On the final possession, BU missed two 3-point attempts and a layup attempt.
  • Holy Cross regained possession with 19 seconds remaining and was able to keep the ball following Landrum's block with 1.7 seconds left to set up Montgomery's game winner.
THE SETUP
  • After Montgomery started the game with a layup, Harper flushed his first 3-pointer to spark a 9-2 run capped by Whyte's layup at 14:58.
  • Harper scored again from behind the arc for a 14-4 advantage at 13:03.
  • The Crusaders though charged back with a 16-6 run over the next six minutes with Caleb Kenney tying the game, 20-20, on a free throw at 7:10.
  • The teams went back and forth the rest of the half with Batchelder hitting a 3-pointer at 52 seconds and Harper scoring on a layup to put Holy Cross' halftime lead at 32-31.
  • Leading 34-33 early in the second, Montgomery hit a jumper to spark a quick 9-1 spurt finished by Octave's jumper at 16:04.
  • With a 45-38 advantage at 14:40, the Crusaders went on an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to grab their largest lead of the game, 56-40.
GAME NOTES
  • With his 19th career double-double Whyte moved up to No. 4 all-time at BU in rebounds with 806 total, surpassing Paul Hendricks ('87). With 1,637 career points, he just needs five more to gain sole possession of the No. 7 slot.
  • Besides jumping up from No. 34 to 31 at 1,076 career points, Harper is now tied-for-ninth all-time at 145 career steals.
  • Landrum became the third Terrier to earn a double-double this season alongside Whyte (5x) and Tynen.
  • Morales is the seventh Terrier to finish in double figure scoring at least three times this season.
  • Holy Cross improved to 60-27 all-time with its first regular season sweep in the series since BU joined the Patriot League in the summer of 2013.
UP NEXT
  • With three games remaining, BU will return home to host Bucknell on Saturday (Feb. 18) at 1 p.m.
  • The Terriers won the previous meeting, 69-61, on the road.
