BU Hosts NCAA Soccer Officiating Seminar

BOSTON – The annual NCAA Soccer Officiating Seminar took place at Boston University on Saturday (May 6), as BU Women's Soccer Head Coach Casey Brown (COM'10) helped host the event at Agganis Arena.
The seminar brings together NCAA soccer coaches, referees, and more to bring together the parties in recognizing steps to authentically learn from each other, sharing their passion for the game. The day featured panels and discussions that included an annual review of rule changes and rule guidelines from the 2022 season, perspective from coaches, video analysis, and points of emphasis on the NCAA's rulebook.
"It was an honor to be able to host the NCAA Soccer Officiating Seminar at BU," said Brown. "The work that the NCAA and Ryan Cigich do to support the overall education and growth of our officials is crucial to collaboratively advancing our game. I really appreciated the opportunity to be a part of the event through all the leadership from Rachel Woo. The idea of 'bridging the gap' between officials and coaches was an especially important area addressed that hopefully has a meaningful impact going forward."
In addition to providing the opening address for the seminar, Brown was presented the NCAA Appreciation Award by NCAA Regional Advisor Rachel Woo, in recognition of hosting the conference at BU and bridging the gap between coaches and officials.
"As a college soccer official, the NCAA seminar conducted at Boston University was an incredibly useful and unique experience." said Woo. "It was helpful to hear directly from coaches about the ways they believe referees can work to support the game, such as deepening our collective commitments around fitness, character, and knowledge about the competing teams on any given match day.
"It is my sincere hope that there will be more seminar opportunities like this, so we may dig into the many ways soccer can be a bridge for learning about the game, as well as ourselves and one another."
Additional speakers included Ryan Cigich, the NCAA National Coordinator of Soccer Officiating, as well as NCAA Secretary-Rules Editor Rich Grady, Mark Kadlecik, Roger Morton, Amanda Ross, and Woo. Brown, in addition to head coaches Jon Anderson from Babson, Marco Koolman from Holy Cross, Kia McNeil from Brown, Nicolle Wood from Salem State, and Tony Martone from Merrimack, spoke as well.
Dr. Don Wilbur was the keynote speaker for the day. Wilbur's presentation centered on the ways individual referees can harness their physical and mental fitness to prepare for the rigors of the modern college soccer game and their daily lives. The theme reinforced pillars of professionalism, positivity, reflection, and leadership as aspects for growth as referees and humans.
