Terriers Fall at #20 Northwestern, 3-0

EVANSTON, Ill. – Despite six saves from junior goalkeeper Celia Braun, the Boston University women's soccer program dropped a 3-0 contest to #20 Northwestern on Thursday evening at Martin Stadium.
Though the Wildcats (4-0-1) took the lead in the 14th minute, BU (2-2-1) kept it a one-score game for nearly 70 minutes, and nearly leveled the match in the second half. However, Northwestern pulled away with two scores in the final eight minutes.
Braun's six stops were the second-most on the season. Junior Morgan Fagan and freshman Kaiya Stewart each posted shots on target.
Meg Boade led all student-athletes with three points on a goal and an assist. Ella Hase and Megan Norkett also recorded goals, while Reiley Fitzpatrick notched a two-save shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Braun made the first save of the game on Aurea del Carmen's chance 4:44 into the match.
- Fagan fired off BU's first shot in the eighth minute, but Fitzpatrick lined it up in the center of the net to collect her first stop. On the counter, Braun denied Hase to her right.
- Boade shook off multiple Terriers and found Hase alone near the left post in the 14th minute. Hase deked to beat Braun to her right for the game's first goal.
- Northwestern nearly went ahead 2-0 in the 29th minute on a challenge from Boade, but the shot couldn't connect.
- The Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick in the 39th minute, but Braun read Boade's attempt correctly and denied the shot by the left post. Boade's second chance sailed off target eight seconds later.
- Eight minutes into the second half, Braun sent away Ingrid Falls' chance in the 53rd minute, her sixth save.
- Northwestern earned two corners in less than a minute starting in the 57th minute, but the Terrier defense prevented a shot on both opportunities.
- In the 68th minute, freshman Kaiya Stewart changed direction to rip a 20-yard blast, but Fitzpatrick sent the ball over the crossbar. BU couldn't find a shot on the ensuing corner kick.
- Sophomore Cam O'Connor followed that up seven minutes later with a chance that was off the mark.
- Norkett doubled Northwestern's tally in the 82nd minute after a volley into the right corner, where she curled around a Terrier marker and tucked a shot into the left post.
- Boade iced the scoring in the 86th minute off a cross from the left corner for her fifth shot of the match.
- Northwestern outshot BU 19-3, with a 9-2 shots on goal advantage.
- BU generated four corner kicks in the game, while the Wildcats had seven.
- Nineteen Terriers saw time on the pitch.
- Braun, senior Grace Ferrara, and sophomore Mackenzie Stickelman played the entire 90 minutes.
- The Terriers fall to 0-2 on the road in 2023.
- Stickelman, the reigning Patriot League Midfielder of the Week, played a full match for the first time in her career.
- Braun now has five career matches with six or more saves.
- The all-time series between BU and Northwestern is now tied at 2-2.
- The Terriers fall to 3-13-1 against Big Ten opponents in program history.
- BU travels back to the Greater Boston area for a date at Northeastern on Sunday (Sept. 3). Opening kick is slated for 6 p.m.
