September 25, 2023 | Men's Basketball, Community Service
BOSTON – Boston University men's basketball head coach Joe Jones announced a new team member, signing 17-year-old Jose Rios Bello through Team IMPACT.
Jose, who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, was officially introduced at a signing day press conference Monday afternoon in Eilberg Lounge prior to the first official practice of preseason. A native of Roslindale, Massachusetts, he will participate in many activities with the team, including games, practices and other team events.
Team IMPACT, a national non-profit organization, has developed a unique multiyear program that matches children facing serious illness and disability with college athletic teams across the country. Based on a clinical model, Team IMPACT guides a symbiotic relationship between teams and children focused on socialization, empowerment, and resilience.
"In our program, we embrace our core values on a daily basis: toughness, attitude and selflessness," said Jones. "Our guy, Jose, resembles all those things and is a major reason we chose him to become a member of our team. All you have to do is spend a little time with him to know this. The energy he brings is so impactful. We are ecstatic to have him as a part of our team and are really looking forward to having a great year with him."
"Team IMPACT is excited to see Jose officially join the Terriers," said Emma Simches, Regional Director of Programs, Northeast at Team IMPACT. "We are proud to partner alongside Boston University, their athletic department and coaching staff to create lifelong bonds and life-changing outcomes between student-athletes and their Team IMPACT teammates."
Boston University has worked with Team IMPACT for the past 11 years, matching 13 children across its men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, women's and men's ice hockey, men's and women's soccer, men's swimming, and women's field hockey teams.
The Terriers will tip off the new season on Monday, Nov. 6, at crosstown rival Northeastern with an 8 p.m. start time.
