BOSTON – Sophomore Shayla Brown scored her first-career goal, but the Boston University women's soccer program dropped a 2-1 decision to Maine on Thursday evening at Nickerson Field.

BU (2-3-2) found the back of the net with 2:03 to go in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room. However, the Black Bears (4-0-3) scored just 44 seconds out of the break, and again with 2:13 on the clock for the come-from-behind result.

Sophomore Cam O'Connor registered the assist on Brown's tally, and shared the team lead with classmate Giulianna Gianino with two shots on target. Junior Celia Braun made two saves.

Kristina Kelly and Abby Kraemer each found the back of the net for Maine. Kira Kutzinski notched six saves between the posts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Gianino recorded the first shot on goal in the game when she delivered a free kick 20 yards out on one bounce to Kutzinski in the fifth minute.
Senior Lily Matthews lined up on the goal line during a Black Bear corner kick in the 11th minute, and was in position to deflect a Luise Reinwald chance to keep the match scoreless.
The Terriers threatened in the 40th minute when junior Eileen Solomon flicked a free kick into the box for classmate Erin Sullenberger, but her header floated wide.
BU found success in the 43rd minute on a similar play, as O'Connor headed Solomon's free kick at Kutzinski. The keeper couldn't handle it, allowing Brown to gain the rebound near the left post the tuck in the shot.
Maine equalized in the 46th minute when Julie Lossius crossed the ball from the left corner into the box for Kelly, who settled it and pinged a blast off the left post and into the net.
Moments later, Gianino drilled a 20-yard chance that Kutzinski tipped into the crossbar and over. Matthews' shot on the ensuing corner was blocked.
In the 81st minute, tic-tac-toe passing between Matthews, junior Morgan Fagan, and sophomore Natalie Godoy led to the latter's 10-yard opportunity. However, Kutzinski came out of net and slid to turn the shot away.
Brown appeared to give the Terriers the lead in the 85th minute when finishing a loose ball, but the official waved the play offside.
Maine went the other direction, where Kraemer buried Lara Kirkby's left-corner cross in the 88th minute.

STATS

Shots favored BU 11-10, including seven shots on goal to Maine's five.
Eight different Terriers recorded shots.
As a team, the Terriers made three saves.
The Black Bears registered six corner kicks, while BU managed three.
Twenty-one Terriers saw time on the pitch. Braun and Solomon played the full 90 minutes.

NOTES

BU's four-game home unbeaten streak ends.
Brown collected her first-career goal in her seventh-career match. It also served as her first recorded shot as a Terrier.
O'Connor's assist was her first collegiate point.
Four of BU's six goals scored this year were the first tallies for a Terrier.
The sophomore class has accounted for two-thirds of BU's scoring in 2023.
The all-time series now stands 16-4-4 in the Terriers' favor. Maine posts its first win over BU since Oct. 10, 2004.
