QUEENS, N.Y. – Facing off against the Big East conference, the Boston University men's tennis team came up just short at St. John's, 4-3, on Saturday evening.
The Terriers (6-4) won two of the three doubles matches for the first point and claimed the top two singles points as well, but the Red Storm (9-2) rallied for the one-point decision to improve to 8-0 at home against unranked opponents, highlighted by an earlier 4-0 victory over Penn State..
In doubles action, SJU posted a 6-3 victory on court No. 1, but senior Johann Sajonz and sophomore Alejandro Licea matched their efforts with an identical score at line 2. In the deciding match in the No. 3 slot, sophomores Corey Craig and Jakob Esterowitz prevailed in the tiebreaker for the 7-6(2) victory and early 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm quickly got on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 4 singles, but Craig quickly retook the lead in the top slot with an impressive 6-3, 6-0, victory over Francisco Bascon, a three-time All-Big Sky First Team honoree and two-time Big Sky Tournament MVP while at Idaho. Esterowitz also won in straight sets at line 2 against All-Big East First Team honoree Carl Gustavsson, 6-4, 6-4.
