Brewster Free Throws, McNair's Career Day Lift Men's Basketball Past Lehigh in 72-71 Thriller

BOSTON – Down by as many as 15 early in the second half, senior Miles Brewster coolly sank a pair of free throws with 4.2 seconds left in regulation to help the Boston University pull out a thrilling 72-71 come-from-behind victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

The Terriers (9-14, 4-6 PL) never led in the second half until Brewster increased his offensive production to 17 points. The Mountain Hawks (7-14, 4-6 PL) outscored BU in the paint (38-32), off turnovers (19-9) and in made free throws (12-10) but were unable to match the Terriers in 3-pointers, as Brewster and freshman Michael McNair netted four apiece to post a 10-7 advantage in made 3-pointers for the program's first one-point win of the season.

Coming off the bench, McNair more than tripled his previous season high of six points with a game-high 21 on the day by shooting 6-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. Brewster added six rebounds, five assists and two steals, while freshman Kyrone Alexander earned seven points, six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Sophomore Otto Landrum also had two blocks, three assists and six rebounds alongside two steals and six points.

Four Mountain Hawks finished in double figures with Tyler Whitney-Sidney earning 18 points, four assists and four steals. Both Burke Chebuhar and Joshua Ingram earned 11 points apiece, and Dominic Parolin earned 10 points with three assists and two steals. Lehigh joined BU in shooting an identical 26-of-52 from the field but hurt its cause at the free throw line, finishing well below their 71.1 percent season average at 12-of-19 (.632).

DOWN THE STRETCH
  • After Landrum cut Lehigh's lead to two on a hook shot at 4:24 in the second half, Ben Knostman scored from behind the arc and Parolin converted on his steal by finding Joshua Ingram for a fastbreak layup and 69-62 lead at 3:34.
  • Following BU's called timeout, the Mountain Hawks missed their last five field goal attempts, as the Terriers ended the game on a 10-2 run ignited by Brewster's 3-pointer with 3:22 remaining in regulation.
  • Lehigh grabbed a 71-67 lead at 1:52 on Whitney-Sidney's two free throws, but Roy came right back with a layup 23 seconds later.
  • Alexander then stepped up with a defensive block, and Brewster drew a foul that led to him making one of two free throws.
  • Despite calling a timeout, Lehigh came up empty in its next possession, and Brewster was able to advantage, driving to the hoop and then netting both free throw attempts at 4.2 seconds.
  • The Mountain Hawks pushed the ball up the court and were off the mark from behind the arc, as the buzzer sounded for the one-point decision.
THE SETUP
  • The first half featured five lead changes and three ties with freshman Matai Baptiste opening the game on a layup and McNair adding a jumper at 15:23 for a 10-7 advantage.
  • Lehigh responded by netting four 3-pointers off four different Mountain Hawks to grab a 19-10 lead with 10:13 left in the half.
  • Nasir Whitlock added his second trey for Lehigh's first double-digit lead, 24-12, at 8:17, and Parolin added a jumper to grab a 29-15 advantage three minutes later.
  • Baptiste hit BU's final layup at 2:04, and Chebuhar earned the Mountain Hawks' final bucket at 1:43 to enter the locker room ahead, 35-24.
  • Three different Mountain Hawks scored early to grab their largest lead of the game, 41-26, with 18:15 remaining.
  • McNair cut the deficit to single digits, 45-38, for the first time in the second half on a 3-pointer at 14:25.
  • Down 54-44 with 11:16 left, the Terriers went on a 13-5 run over the next three minutes capped by another McNair trey.
  • Parolin hit one of his own for the 63-57 advantage at 6:42 and helped extend the lead to 69-62 with Lehigh's eighth steal at 3:39.
GAME NOTES
  • McNair became the 12th different Terrier to score in double figures this season and the third to score 20+ points alongside Brewster and senior Anthony Morales (2x).
  • McNair's 21 points are the most by a true freshman since Jonas Harper netted 22 at Holy Cross on Feb. 18, 2019.
  • Brewster finished with 15+ points for the fourth time in 12 contests and tallied five or more assists for the seventh time this season.
  • BU won by one for the first time in two years following a 75-74 home victory vs. Army on Feb. 9, 2022.
  • The Terriers improved to 5-1 all-time under head coach Joe Jones when the teams finish with an equal shooting percentage.
  • BU improved to 14-9 all-time against Lehigh with its fifth straight home victory. 
UP NEXT
  • BU will remain home and host defending Patriot League champion Colgate on Wednesday (Feb. 7) at 7 p.m.
  • The Terriers owned a 33-28 halftime lead at Cotterell Court back in January before the Raiders pulled away in a 75-59 decision.
