Lightweight Rowing To Start Spring Against MIT’s Openweights, Wellesley

March 29, 2024

BOSTON – A new era of Boston University lightweight rowing begins on Saturday (Mar. 30) when the Terriers open the spring portion of their 2023-24 schedule, hosting the MIT openweight crew as well as Wellesley on the Charles River.

Saturday marks the first spring race for Head Coach Mary Foster, who arrived to Terrier Town after five years as an assistant with Harvard-Radcliffe. Assistant Coach Elizabeth Hughes is set for her third spring on staff.

Saturday's races will air on ESPN+ as well as NESN, as part of BU Athletics' Fifty Forward series. For more on Fifty Forward, please click here. All four of Saturday's races will air between 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

BU enters the spring after a 2023 slate that culminated in a runner-up finish at the 2023 IRA National Championship Regatta. The Terriers captured bronze medals in the Varsity 4 and Double while placing fourth in the Varsity 8, finishing just behind Princeton.

In the fall, the Terriers recorded a pair of top-three finishes at the Head of the Charles. The Lightweight 8+ placed second for the first time since 2017, while the first-ever Championship Double entry was second among lightweight crews and third out of 20 participants.

All but two rowers from BU's IRA crews return for the spring. The 2023-24 edition of the Terriers boasts seven seniors, eight juniors, nine sophomores, and 15 freshmen. Earlier in the month, junior Zoey Goodness and sophomore Ela Ersan were highlighted as CRCA Athletes to Watch ahead of the spring after spring a majority of 2023 in BU's Varsity 8.

On Mar. 19, the IRA released its Lightweight Preseason Poll. BU's Varsity 8 was tabbed fourth, while the Four and Double were slotted third. Princeton was the top choice in all three boats.
