Terrier Twelve - #5: Women’s Rowing Captures Third Patriot League Championship

July 19, 2024

Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number 5 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the women's rowing program, which secured its second Patriot League championship in the last three seasons and the third in program history.

BU's spring began on March 29 with wins in three dual races against Cornell on the Charles River. Finishing nearly 21 seconds ahead, the Terrier Varsity 8 was named the Patriot League's Boat of the Week on April 3.

After all five of its entries at the Eastern Sprints on May 5 advanced to their respective Grand Finals, BU returned to the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. for the 2024 Patriot League Championship, the site of its title in 2022. BU won all of its morning heats to enter the Grand Final in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Varsity 4 as the top seed.

For the first time since joining the conference for the 2013-14 academic year, BU swept all three Grand Final races to secure the program's third Patriot League title. The Terriers V4 crossed the finish line in 7:45.819 to repeat as gold medalists in the Grand Final. The 2V8's winning time of 6:56.337 guided BU to its third-straight win in the Grand Final. The V8 recorded its first gold in the Grand Final since 2017 after completing the course in 6:42.028.

In his first season at the helm, Director of Women's Rowing Malcolm Doldron was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. BU's Varsity 8, coxed by Audrey Lucerne and stroked by Sofia Suhinin, earned Patriot League Boat of the Year honors.

Seven Terriers received All-Patriot League Team honors. Lucerne, Susan Cook, Anna Dechantsreiter, and Mariana Forehand represented BU on the First Team. Suhinin, Camilla Silvestri, and Ingrid Eshuis garnered Second Team recognition. Dechantsreiter, a senior captain, became the Terriers' first-ever Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, linking up with Lulu November to earn spots on the Academic All-Patriot League Team.

BU went on to compete in the NCAA Championships at East Fork/Harsha Lake in Bethel, Ohio. The 2V8 and V4 each finished 18th in the nation, while the V8 placed 20th. Finishing in 19th place overall amongst the 22-team field, BU's 24 team points surpassed their previous totals from its 2014 and 2022 appearances in the regatta.

Following the spring season's conclusion, BU participated in the esteemed Henley Royal Regatta on the River Thames in England in July. Sending two crews across the pond, the Terriers' Varsity 8+ qualified for the Island Challenge Cup. BU went on to advance to the quarterfinal round, becoming one of two NCAA crews to continue racing past Wednesday (July 3).
