Terrier Twelve - #6: Lightweight Rowing Wins Eastern Sprints, Double National Championship

July 16, 2024

Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number 6 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the lightweight rowing program, which captured the Konrad Ulbrich Team Trophy as the top program at the 2024 Eastern Sprints, and went to place third at the IRA National Championship Regatta.

In its first year under Head Coach Mary Foster, the Terriers opened the campaign with the 58th Head of the Charles Regatta. BU's Lightweight Double of Caroline Burchette and Kylie Lough earned bronze in the event, while the Lightweight 8+ was the runner-up for the first time since 2017.

In a spring season that began with junior Zoey Goodness and sophomore Ela Ersan earning spots as CRCA Athletes to Watch, the Terrier Lightweight 8+ repeated as the victor at the Knecht Cup in New Jersey. At the Eastern Sprints, wins in the Lightweight 4+ and 2x as well as a third-place result in the 8+ gave BU 45 team points, surpassing defending national champion Princeton to give the Terriers their first Ulbrich Trophy since 2019.

At the IRA Championship, Lough and Burchette surged to BU's fourth-ever national championship in the Double. The Lightweight 4+ was the national runner-up in the Grand Final for the third time in program history, and first since 2021. Overall, BU finished with 61 team points to place third in the nation, its first bronze since 2015. From that year onwards, the Terriers have finished top-three at every fully-competed IRA Championship.

Following the spring, BU participated in the prestigious Henley Women's Regatta on the River Thames in England from June 21-23. All five of its crews qualified from their time trials. Ersan in the Championship Lightweight Single, Lough and Burchette in the Championship Lightweight Double, and BU's Aspirational Academic 8+ all reached the quarterfinals. The Aspirational Academic 4- defeated Imperial College's top crew in the heat and GSR Aegir in the quarterfinals to finish inside the top-four before falling to eventual champion Durham University in the semifinal.

Foster and Assistant Coach Elizabeth Hughes were tabbed as both the CRCA's Lightweight National and Regional Coach and Staff of the Year. Maecy Rickman was chosen as a CRCA All-American, while four Terriers garnered CRCA Scholar-Athlete recognition.
