Terrier Twelve - #9: Men's Lacrosse Advances to PL Title Game for Second Time in Three Years

July 5, 2024

Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number nine in this year's Terrier 12 is men's lacrosse, as the Terriers returned to the Patriot League title game for the second time in three years.

The Terriers' march back to the championship round included several quality wins, most notably a 14-9 victory over No. 1 Army West Point on March 22 at Nickerson Field, which was the program's first triumph over a top-ranked opponent. The Terriers never trailed in that victory which ended Army's perfect season, racing out to a 4-0 lead en route to the second top-five win and fourth top-10 win in program history.

The Terriers closed the regular season with one of the most dramatic comebacks in the program's 11 seasons. Needing a win at No. 20 Colgate to secure home-field advantage for the PL quarterfinals, the Terriers fell behind, 10-2, in the first half before rallying for a 13-12 victory. The two teams then met again in the quarterfinals and played another thriller. This time it was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams needing three overtimes to break a 17-17 deadlock. In the third OT, graduate student Louis Perfetto found junior Brenden Kelly at the doorstep for the winner that set up a rematch with top-seeded Army in the semifinals.

The Terriers once again showed their resiliency, rallying to take a late lead before Army tied it in the final minute. Undeterred, BU earned a man-up chance at the end of regulation and cashed in during overtime, with graduate student Jake Cates providing the heroics. The Terriers then battled valiantly against second-seeded Lehigh in the title game, with the Mountain Hawks earning an 11-10 win in a heartbreaking end to the Terriers' postseason run.

Several Terriers earned individual honors in 2024, highlighted by a historic campaign by Perfetto. He earned All-America accolades after setting career highs with 45 goals, 48 assists and 93 points. Perfetto finished his career as BU's all-time leader in assists (144) and is second all-time at BU in goals (127) and points (271). Classmate Roy Meyer was named an All-American for a third straight year and ended his storied career as the program's leader in caused turnovers (146), which ranks fourth in NCAA history. Cates and graduate student Patrick Morrison were selected as All-Americans for the first time. Those four, along with junior Will Barnes and all-time leading point producer and goal scorer Vince D'Alto, also earned All-Patriot League honors. A two-time All-American, D'Alto wrapped his stellar career as the program's all-time leading point producer (280) and goal scorer (167).

BU was among the nation's best in several statistical categories this season and was also the only school to produce three players with 40+ goals in 2024, as Perfetto (45), Kelly (43) and D'Alto (41) were terrific in their first season starting together at attack. Among all NCAA teams, BU ranked third in opponent clear percentage (.776), fourth in caused turnovers per game (10.53), sixth in assists per game (8.71) and 10th in saves per game (13.59).
