Terriers Fall to Rams in Rhode Island, 3-2

KINGSTON, R.I. – Juniors Giulianna Gianino and Margy Porta both found the back of the net, but the Boston University women's soccer program couldn't overcome three first-half goals in a 3-2 loss to Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex.

BU (0-6-2) pulled within one goal on multiple occasions, but the Rams (3-3-2) withheld the Terriers to two shots in the second half to preserve the result.

Gianino notched her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute, while Porta's score came in the 48th minute. Senior Hugrún Helgadóttir totaled one assist, while goalkeepers Celia Braun and Bridget Carr combined for three saves.

Lauren MacDonald score twice to pace Rhode Island, both on assists from Sam Hagerty. Courtney Poon potted the game-deciding goal in the 32nd minute to back two saves from Abigail McCarthy.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both sides had chances in the opening five minutes. Cristina Sallent hit the crossbar for Rhode Island, then a near-goal off a BU corner kick was nixed due to a foul inside the box before the shot.
  • Senior Morgan Fagan launched a try from 15 yards out after BU sustained pressure in the Rams' end, but it narrowly floated over the woodwork.
  • The Rams opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Hagerty raced down the left flank, crossing for a one-timer to MacDonald near the left post.
  • Hagerty once again crossed a ball from the right corner after URI settled a free kick, and though BU gave trouble to MacDonald for possession near the right post, the Ram poked the ball in to secure the brace in the 16th minute.
  • In the 22nd minute, Fagan drew a foul inside the box after cutting inside from the right corner. Gianino took the penalty kick and buried it to the left of the net.
  • A loose ball in the Terrier box in the 32nd minute found its way to Poon, who collected the ball and sent it through for a 3-1 Rams edge that stood at halftime.
  • Helgadóttir ignited the second half when her service pass into the box found Porta, who headed the ball into the net near the right post three minutes out of the break.
  • Generating a free kick outside the box in the 51st minute, Sallent once again blasted a shot that clanged off the woodwork.
  • Sophomore Kaiya Stewart nearly tied the match in the 73rd minute when she was all alone from 10 yards out, but her shot went right to McCarthy for the save.
  • With nearly seven minutes remaining in regulation, Tierra Garniss poked a 12-yard shot towards the right post, requiring Carr to make a leaping save to send the ball away.
STATS
  • URI outshot BU 13-6, though shots on goal were closer at 6-4 in the Rams' favor.
  • Fagan led five different Terriers who had shots with two.
  • Rhode Island generated seven corner kicks to BU's five.
  • Gianino and senior Allison Hanlon played the entire 90 minutes.
NOTES
  • Gianino leads the Terriers with four goals on the season. She is now one point away from a share of 24th place on BU's all-time scoring list.
  • Porta is now second on the team with two goals. Both tallies have occurred on the road.
  • Helgadóttir registered her first point since Oct. 21, 2023 at American.
  • Carr notched her first collegiate appearance between the posts making multiple saves, and did not allow a goal.
  • Hanlon, who has already set a career-high in minutes played this year, has not left the pitch in the last four contests.
  • BU's unbeaten streak against URI ends at seven games as the all-time series moves to 9-3-1 in the Terriers' advantage.
