BALTIMORE, Md. – Junior
Margy Porta scored for the second-consecutive match, freshman
Bridget Carr made six saves, and the Boston University women's soccer program tied with Loyola Maryland 1-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
In both teams' Patriot League lidlifter, BU (0-6-3, 0-0-1 PL) struck first in the 16th minute, and held the lead until the Greyhounds (4-2-3, 0-0-1 PL) leveled the score in the 65th minute. Both team combined for 26 shots in the contest.
Porta's goal was her third of the season, as she was one of eight different Terriers with a shot. Carr played the full 90 minutes in her first-career start.
Baylee DeSmit extended her Patriot League lead with her seventh goal of the year, leading all student-athletes with nine shots. Brigid Mulholland made two saves between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Jaiden Schultz fired the first shot of the game just 45 seconds in, whipping the ball wide left near the left post.
- A 20-yard shot from senior Morgan Fagan's boot zipped right to Mulholland near the right post in the 13th minute.
- Porta found the back of the net in the 16th minute after she was able to get her head on a clear attempt by the Greyhounds. Mulholland came out of her net to try and corral the bouncing ball in the box, but Porta headed the ball again into the empty net.
- Nearly a minute later, Loyola Maryland garnered a free kick from 25 yards out. DeSmit rocketed a shot towards the low-center of the goal, requiring Carr to extend her right leg to make the save. The rebound chance was sent over the crossbar.
- Carr made another save in the 30th minute as Leah Carter sprinted down the right wing, placing a right-footed shot that Carr turned aside.
- In the 38th minute, BU earned a free kick from 22 yards out. Junior Giulianna Gianino lifted the ball wide towards the top-right corner of the goal.
- Gianino opened the second half with a cross off a free kick into the box, and junior Mackenzie Stickelman lofted a shot over the woodwork in the 48th minute.
- Both teams had chances around the 57th minute. A cross found DeSmit for a slow shot onto Carr, then BU had consecutive shots blocked on the other end.
- DeSmit equalized in the 65th minute, delivering a 20-yard free kick into the lower-left corner of the goal.
- The Greyhounds had two DeSmit chances to go up in the 76th minute, but both her shots inside the box were lifted over the bar.
- Carr made two diving stops in the 79th minute, the first on a diving stop to her left to deny DeSmit.
- On BU's counter a minute later, freshman Olivia Avellar was alone near the left post to flick the ball with her left foot, but a Greyhound defender was on the goal line to send the shot away.
- DeSmit's final chance came in the 87th minute on another free kick. From 20 yards out, she blasted the chance off the crossbar.
