BOSTON – Despite sophomore
Jack Grossman and senior
John Roman both finding the back of the net for the first time this season, the Boston University men's soccer team faltered late to Northeastern, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field.
The Huskies (3-6-3) benefited from an own goal in the first half and then rallied with two goals over the final five minutes of regulation to hand the Terriers (8-4-0) their first home loss of the season.
Finishing with a 20-6 advantage in shot attempts, BU struck first in the 20th minute on Grossman's goal and later grabbed the lead again one minute into the second half off Roman's score. Tobias Jahn and the crossbar kept the Terriers from extending the lead with the netminder totaling six saves and the woodwork stopping two shot attempts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU dominated possession for much of the first half with junior Ben Mazza-Bergeron and freshman Sebastian Otero both forcing Jahn to make a save early in the game.
- After sending one shot out left during the third minute, sophomore Dylan Williams drove into the box and nailed the crossbar at both 8:06 and 17:10, respectively.
- The Terriers shortly thereafter broke through at 19:36 by drawing a foul just outside the right side of the box and Otero finding Grossman at the top on the free kick for a 20-yard blast.
- Senior Sheraz Saadat made his first save at 39:38 but was unable to stop the Huskies from tying the game two minutes later, as a Northeastern shot attempt from 25 yards out gained some height off a failed clear attempt.
- Posting a 10-1 advantage in shots during the first half, BU quickly retook the lead in the second when senior Diego Rived centered sophomore Pharis Petrica's corner kick to set up Roman's goal.
- The Terriers remained on the attack for the next 20 minutes with Jahn stopping a pair of shots and junior Andrea Di Blasio hitting the post at 61:01.
- Saadat made another stop at 74:05 and added his third at 81:17.
- The Huskies tied the game in the 86th minute when the backline tried to draw an offsides but Neil Devnani was able to get in position to score on a service ball from Julius Ruger.
- After Jahn made a diving stop on senior Ethan Gill's shot in the 87th minute, the Huskies grabbed their first lead of the game at 89:21 thanks to Bryce Flowers flicking a cross into the back of the net.
