Terriers Shut Out Holy Cross, 3-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Boston University women's ice hockey team (4-10-1, 4-5-1 HE) shut out Holy Cross (12-6-1, 4-5-1 HE) 3-0 on Tuesday night at the Hart Center Rink.
The Terriers scored one goal in each of the first two periods and fended off the Crusaders through two penalty kills to take a 2-0 lead headed into the final stanza.
Seniors Luisa Welcke and Lilli Welcke scored for the Terriers and each tallied an assist on the other's goal. Freshman Mia Vergilii also found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Seniors Sydney Healey, Maeve Kelly, Riley Walsh and Clara Yuhn all registered one assist each in the win.
Junior netminder Mari Pietersen made 19 saves in between the posts for her third career shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- At 8:47 in the first, Walsh propelled the puck to Li. Welcke, who passed across the ice to Lu. Welcke.
- Lu. Welcke's shot from the left point soared into the back of the net to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
- The Terriers went to the box for cross checking with 1:11 to play in the first and successfully killed the penalty at the beginning of the second.
- BU added to its lead when S. Healey passed to Li. Welcke, who slid the puck into the net from the bottom of the slot for BU's second goal of the night.
- The Terriers were called for hooking at the 12:13 mark and were once again successful on the kill.
- At 1:28 in the third frame, BU went on the power play due to a Holy Cross trip but did not score through the advantage.
- Passes from Kelly and Yuhn made their way to Vergilii, whose shot from the slot lifted past Holy Cross' netminder to give the Terriers a 3-0 lead with 8:45 left on the clock.
- BU went to the box for elbowing at the 13:54 mark and killed off the penalty, holding on for the remainder of the period to shut out Holy Cross, 3-0.
GAME NOTES
- Holy Cross outshot BU, 19 to 17.
- BU was 0-for-1 on the power play while Holy Cross was 0-for-3.
- BU won 22 faceoffs compared to Holy Cross' 17.
- The Terriers blocked 10 shots.
- All three of Pietersen's shutout performances in her career have come against Holy Cross.
- With the win, BU gives the athletics department another point in the Turnpike Trophy standings which BU currently leads, 6-0.
UP NEXT
- BU will conclude the first half with a home-and-home series against No. 7 UConn.
- The Terriers travel to UConn on Friday (Dec. 5) for a 6 p.m. game before hosting the Huskies on Saturday (Dec. 6) at 4 p.m.
