
Terriers Win Shootout After 1-1 Tie at No. 7 UConn

STORRS, Conn. – The Boston University women's ice hockey team (4-10-2, 4-5-2 HE) skated to a 1-1 tie and won the shootout 2-1 at No. 7 UConn (12-3-2, 5-1-1 HE) on Friday evening.
Both teams skated evenly through the opening 20 minutes with no scoring. In the middle stanza, BU found the back of the net on a shorthanded chance before UConn responded in the final minutes to head into the third frame tied, 1-1.
That tie held through the final stanza and went unchanged in overtime. In the shootout, neither team scored in the first round. BU found the back of the net second round while the Huskies evened the tally in the third. BU immediately responded to go ahead 2-1 in the third round to win the shootout after skating to the 1-1 tie.
Senior Sydney Healey scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal in regulation. She and fellow senior Lilli Welcke scored in the shootout. Netminder Mari Pietersen made 42 saves in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU skated well on both ends of the ice through the bulk of the first frame.
- The Terriers went to the box at 14:04 for goaltender interference and successfully killed the penalty.
- At 6:48 in the second, BU entered the box for hooking.
- The Terriers added another to the box with 29 seconds left on the original penalty kill, this time for interference.
- While BU was on the second stretch of its penalty kill, S. Healey won the puck at the BU blue line and broke away to score with a shot that slipped in at the left post, giving BU a 1-0 lead at the 10:02 mark.
- UConn went to the box for high sticking at 10:40, but the Huskies were successful on the penalty kill.
- At 16:50 in the second, UConn evened the score, 1-1.
- Neither team found the back of the net or went to the box in the entire third frame, resulting in overtime.
- In the extra minutes, both teams came close to scoring, but the game went to a shootout.
- Neither team scored in the first round of the shootout.
- After UConn missed its second attempt, S. Healey scored a fake-out goal in the second round to give BU a 1-0 lead.
- UConn then found the back of the net on its third attempt to even the shootout tally, 1-1.
- BU responded when Li. Welcke scored the go-ahead goal to help BU win the shootout, 2-1.
GAME NOTES
- BU narrowly outshot UConn, 44 to 43.
- The Huskies won 30 faceoffs while BU won 19.
- BU was 0-for-1 on the power play while UConn was 0-for-3.
- Pietersen's 42 saves were the second-most of her career.
