BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Sophia Souza, junior Haley Newman and sophomore Izzy Valantiejus of the Boston University women's swimming & diving team earned All-Patriot League honors for the 2024-25 season while Newman was selected to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as announced by the league office.
Souza and Newman both earned all-league recognition for the third time in their careers while Valantiejus became a first-time honoree. Newman was named to the All-PL First Team for the second time in three years. Sozua and Valantiejus were second-team honorees.
Newman won the 200-yard butterfly on the final night of the Patriot League Championships last week at Bucknell and also picked up a silver medal in the 400-yard individual medley. She totaled a team-best 80 points at the meet, adding a ninth-place finish in the 200 IM while swimming on three relays. Newman now has five PL medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze) in her career.
Souza reached both diving finals at the PL Championships, finishing second in the 1-meter and fourth in the 3-meter for a total of 54 points. She completes her stellar career with four Patriot League medals including back-to-back 3-meter gold as a sophomore and junior.
Valantiejus was impressive in the distance events, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a personal-best time of 17:00.18. She also finished ninth in the 500 freestyle and 12th in the 200 freestyle to earn a total of 60 points towards the team score.
Newman was selected to the 12-member Academic All-Patriot League Team for the first time in her career. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be key performer within their sport.
