Women’s Track & Field Wins Indoor Patriot League Championship
March 2, 2025 | Women's Track & Field
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – For the third time in program history and the first time since 2016, the Boston University women's track and field team claimed the Patriot League indoor track and field championship at Navy's Wesley A. Brown Field House on Sunday afternoon.
BU amassed 166 points to win the championship, marking its second-highest points total in program history and its highest since last winning the title in 2016. Navy finished second with 148.5 points while Army West Point took third with 139.5 points.
Director of track and field and cross country Grant Cartwright was named coach of the year. Junior Peace Omonzane was named the field athlete of the meet while junior Vera Sjöberg was named track athlete of the meet and the highest points scorer. Both Omonzane and Sjöberg received their honors for the second year in a row.
The Terriers picked up three golds, one silver and one bronze on the final day of competition for a total of 11 medals to help BU to its title.
Sjöberg successfully defended her titles in the mile and 3,000m races to complete a sweep of the women's distance events for the second year in a row. She is the first in Patriot League history to claim golds in the mile, 3,000m and 5,000m in back-to-back years at the indoor championship meet. Sjöberg also accumulated 30 points from her three event wins, marking her as the highest point scorer for the second year in a row. The Stockholm, Sweden native's time of 4:40.71 in the mile set a meet record, taking down a time that had been set by former Terrier Monica Adler in 2014.
Omonzane took gold in the triple jump to sweep the horizontal jumps for the second consecutive year. She is the first Terrier to win both horizontal jumps in back-to-back years since Lovie Burleson in 2016 and 2017.
The Terriers swept the podium in triple jump with senior Emma Lawrence claiming silver and senior Jamie Chamberlain taking home bronze. BU took five of six positions on the podium in the horizontal jumps after Omonzane won the long jump on Saturday and senior Jamie Chamberlain took silver.
Freshman Iman Roka picked up a bronze for BU in the 60m hurdles. In the high jump, senior Asia Hamilton finished tied for third, earning a bronze medal.
The Terriers had a number of athletes pick up important points in finals, with junior Jada Smith taking fourth in the 60m finals and earning five points. Junior Merem Gabriel-Rodriguez earned fifth in the 3000m, freshman Caroline Collins took fifth in the mile and junior Sammy Seabury took sixth.
