BURLINGTON, Vt. – Continuing the season-opening three-game road trip, the Boston University men's soccer team fell at No. 1 Vermont, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The defending NCAA champion Catamounts (2-0) struck first in the 20th minute and added two more first-half goals to extend their home unbeaten streak to 15 contests, as the Terriers (1-1) suffered their first defeat of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Ben Alexander made his first of five saves in the second minute when he stopped a hard 12-yard shot from Andrew Millar.
- Maximilian Kissel tried to finish off a dangerous cross with an attempt directed toward the right post, but again, Alexander made the save to keep the game scoreless.
- After stopping sophomore Dylan Williams' shot and clearing the ensuing corner kick at 11:02, the Catamounts cleared away another BU corner one minute later.
- Alexander tried to smother another Vermont cross in the 20th minute, but Kissel was able to tap it away to set up Millar's point-blank strike into the back of the net.
- The Catamounts added another goal by feeding the ball through the backline on the counter to draw Alexander off his line and find Philipp Kuehn for an empty net strike at 29:46.
- Vermont cleared away two more BU corners in the 31st minute and successfully headed in its second of two attempted corners during the 36th minute.
- Catamount keeper Niklas Herceg helped the offense add one more five minutes into the second half with a long pass down the left side to Marcell Papp, who sent a cross to Kissel in the middle of the box for the 4-0 advantage.
- Trying to avoid the shutout, senior Alex Bonnington forced a diving stop from Herceg at 72:42, and Williams forced another one nine minutes later while on the run.
