Terriers Strike Early, Roll to 5-1 Victory at Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – With four newcomers scoring their first goals in scarlet and white, the Boston University men's soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory at Charleston Friday night.
Senior Ethan Gill, freshman Sebastian Otero, junior Lapo Romieri and sophomore Pharis Petrica all found the back of the net to help the Terriers (2-1) produce their biggest offensive output since a 5-1 win over Harvard in 2009. The Cougars (0-3) added an own goal in the 73rd minute to suffer their biggest margin of defeat at home since 2008, as senior Ben Alexander totaled five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Four minutes into the contest, senior Alex Bonnington sent a dangerous cross into the box, and a Charleston defender tried to clear it out of bounds but kicked the ball mid-air right to the keeper.
- Jourdan Schumacher was unable to hold onto the ball, and Gill pounced on the rebound for the early 1-0 lead.
- After forcing a save in the 16th minute, Otero fired a shot toward the left post from the top of the box after receiving a pass from sophomore Dylan Williams, who made a long run from midfield to set up the goal at 29:41.
- The Cougars cut the deficit in half three minutes later with Ben Bagshaw sending in Lennon Gill's free kick taken outside the box near a corner flag.
- Schumacher kept BU's lead at 2-1 entering the locker room with an impressive leaping save off freshman Anthony Harper's header in the 36th minute.
- Through the first 15 minutes of the second half, the Terriers cleared three corners and Alexander stopping a pair of Charleston shot attempts.
- BU then pulled away at 60:34 when Romieri headed in a free kick service pass from Petrica for the Terriers' first set-piece goal of the season.
- Six minutes later, junior Keke Abai played the ball up to freshman Austin Mobray who sent a cross into the box from the right side for Petrica's quick strike.
- In the 73rd minute, while being pressured from a defender on his right side, Schumacher tried to play the ball to a teammate on his left but curled the pass into the back of the net.
- Alexander added three more saves to seal the victory.
- Petrica became the first Terrier this season to earn a goal and assist in the same.
- Mobray maintained his lead in assists with his second of the season.
- Abai earned his first career assist.
- Charleston finished the contest edging BU in shot attempts, 14-13, with Schumacher matching Alexander's five saves.
- The Terriers earned six corners after totaling five through the first two contests..
- Following a season-opening three-game road trip, the Terriers will next open the home slate against Brown on Friday, Sept. 5, with a 7 p.m. start time.
- BU will host the Bears for the first time since 2018 in a series that dates back to 1969.
- Last year's contest in Providence marked the teams' first matchup since 2019 with the Bears prevailing, 5-1.
