Terriers Shut Out Providence, 3-0, in Hockey East Opening Round

BOSTON – The eighth-seeded Boston University women's ice hockey team (11-20-3, 8-14-2 HE) shut out ninth-seeded Providence (11-22-2, 8-14-2 HE) in a 3-0 decision in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament on Wednesday night at Walter Brown Arena.
BU scored a shorthanded goal in the first minute of the second framed and held that lead until late in the third when it tacked on two empty net goal to complete the 3-0 victory. Junior netminder Mari Pietersen made 20 saves in the win for her fourth career shutout.
Seniors Sydney Healey and Maeve Kelly led BU's efforts with each having a two-point performance thanks to two goals from Healey and two assists from Kelly. Senior Lilli Welcke scored BU's third goal, unassisted. Sophomore Kaileigh Quigg and senior Luisa Welcke each logged one assist in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU served a penalty for tripping at 19:10 in the first.
- Just 41 seconds into the middle frame, S. Healey scored a shorthanded goal from the slot to give BU a 1-0 lead. She was assisted by Quigg.
- The Terriers successfully killed off the remainder of the penalty.
- BU went back to the box at the 7:18 mark due to a cross checking call and was successful on the penalty kill once again.
- Providence went to the box for body checking at 15:44
- The Terriers were then called for interference with 24 seconds left on the power play.
- Both penalties cleared without a change in score.
- Providence served a holding penalty at 4:24 in the third.
- The Friars then sent another skater to the box for hitting from behind with 36 seconds left on the original BU power play.
- The score remained 1-0 in BU's favor at the conclusion of both penalties.
- BU was called for body checking with 10:11 to play in the third.
- With 46 seconds left on the penalty kill, Providence was called for too many skaters on the ice, and both penalties concluded without a change in score.
- Providence pulled its netminder at 17:42 in the third.
- BU capitalized on the empty net when S. Healey took passes from Kelly and Lu. Welcke up the ice to score BU's second goal.
- The Terriers added another on the empty net thanks to an unassisted goal from Li. Welcke as the Terriers secured the 3-0 shutout over Providence in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament.

- The Terriers and the Friars were both 0-for-4 on the power play.
