Lightweight Rowing Snags Two Wins Over MIT

BOSTON – In its second home dual race of the spring season, the Boston University lightweight rowing program posted two victories and a photo finish against MIT's openweight crews on Saturday (April 4) on the Charles River.

Strong gusts that reached 17 miles per hour picked up in the later morning as clouds overtook the skies. Both teams enjoyed a tailwind by the time their races started.

BU and MIT each launched a pair of fours, with Harvard-Radcliffe joining for the race. The Terrier Second Varsity 4, coxed by Maria Cummins-Astor and stroked by Emilia Vukasinovic, posted a sizable victory in 7:46.970. The Varsity 4, coxed by Mira Saldanha and stroked by Sidra Sanders, placed second in a time of 7:56.533, over 11 seconds in front of the Engineers' top four.

The Varsity 8, coxed by Amna Rezvi and stroked by Caroline Burchette, had a tight battle with MIT throughout the course. In the final 250 meters, the Terriers created enough of a gap to cross the finish line first in 6:30.990. MIT was right behind at 6:32.583.

With water conditions getting choppier, the Second Varsity 8, coxed by Lylah Nag and stroked by Mia Seibert, went back-and-forth with the Engineers in the second half of the course. In a photo finish, MIT's bow ball was just in front at 6:54.803 while BU crossed in 6:55.422, just a .619-second difference.

BU next gears up for the annual Knecht Cup from April 11-12 on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
