For the 10th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 4 in this year's Terrier 12 is the men's ice hockey team's Hockey East regular-season title and their double-overtime victory against defending national champion North Dakota in the opening round of the NCAAs.
Coach David Quinn and the Terriers were ranked in the top 10 of both national polls all season long and used an eight-game win streak to reach the top spot in the USCHO poll at the end of January. A 4-1 home victory over Notre Dame on the final day of the regular season allowed BU to clinch a share of the Hockey East regular-season crown for the 10th time in program history.
The Terriers' strong play throughout the year helped to secure an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and they earned a first-round match-up with North Dakota in the West Regional in Fargo, just over an hour from the Fighting Hawks' campus. In enemy territory, BU silenced the crowd in double overtime when freshman Clayton Keller found sophomore Charlie McAvoy at the right post to lift the team to a thrilling 4-3 victory.
Keller was named national, regional and league rookie of the year while McAvoy was a first-team All-American. The two joined rookie goaltender Jake Oettinger on the Hockey East All-Star team.
One other remarkable night during the season took place on Jan. 5, when Team USA, with six Terriers on the roster, topped Canada in the gold-medal game at World Juniors at the same time the Terriers kicked off their second half with a wild 5-4 overtime win at home over Union thanks to a hat trick by sophomore Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson.
Keller, McAvoy and Oettinger were joined by freshmen Kieffer Bellows and Patrick Harper along with sophomore Jordan Greenway on the triumphant U.S. squad. Freshman Dante Fabbro earned a silver medal with Canada, allowing BU to become the first North American university or junior team to produce seven players at World Juniors. Keller and McAvoy were named to the All-Tournament Team while Keller and Greenway were both selected in Team USA's Top 3 Players of the tournament.
